To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, REUBEN M. PACKING- HAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Granville, in the county of- Putnam and State of Illinois, have invented certain. new and useful Improvements in Tube-Scrapers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to scrapers for removing deposits from steam boiler and other tubes, fiues and pipes; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is an end view of a scraper constructed according to this invention. Fig. 2 is a side View of portions of the scraper, some of its blades being omitted. Fig. 8 is a plan View of one of the blades and a portion of the supporting ring. a

A ring 2 is provided, and 3 is a handle for operating the scraper. This handle has prongs 4: which are secured to one side of the ring 2, so that the handle is arranged on the axis of the ring. Scraper blades 5 are provided and are pivotally supported by the ring and are arranged in pairs. These blades are all alike, and they have stems 6 which are arranged radially of the axis of the ring.

Any desired number of pairs of blades may housed, and in the scraper shown three pairs are provided. One pair is arranged at the middle part of the ring, which has holes 8 for the stems to project through, and the other two pairs are arranged upon opposite sides of the ring, the blades being arranged symmetrically around it with their cutting or scraping edges 9 inclined at an angle of about 10 degrees to the plane of the ring.

The ring is provided at suitable places with projecting lugs 10, and the stems of the blades have hubs 12 which are pivoted on pins or rivets 14: secured to the lugs 10.

Helical springs 15 are secured between the stems of each pair of blades, and extend across the axis of the ring, and permit the blades to move laterally of the ring to a Specification of Letters Patent.

limited extent in each direction. The cutting or scraping edges of the blades are curved so as to scrape the tubes to good advantage and the blades are proportioned so that they do not strike against each other when moved laterally in the act of cleaning the tube.

When in their normal positions, as shown, the edges of the blades will not slip loosely into the tube, but are held against its sides by their springs when the cleaner is forced into the tube and is operated so as to scrape and clean it of deposits.

What I claim is:

1. In a tube scraper, a supporting ring provided with a handle, a series of blades provided with stems which are pivotally con nected with the said ring, said blades being arranged in pairs at an angle to the plane of the ring and with their stems radial of the axis of the ring and being movable laterally of the ring, and springs extending across the axis of the ring and coupling the stems of each pair of blades together.

2. In a tube scraper, a supporting ring provided with a handle, a series of blades provided with stems which are pivotally connected with the said ring, one pair being arranged at the middle part of the ring and the other pairs upon opposite sides of the ring, the said blades being arranged around the ring with their stems radial of its axis and being movable laterally, and springs coupling the stems of each pair of blades together and extending across the axis of the ring.

3. In a tube scraper, a supporting ring provided with a handle, a series of blades provided with stems the outer end portions of which are pivoted to the ring, said blades being arranged in pairs at an angle to the plane of the ring and with their stems projecting crosswise of it, said stems and blades being ivoted to move laterally of the ring, and springs extending between the inner end portions of each pair of stems and normally holding the blades expanded.
