TWINE-CUTTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
PatentedAug. 24, 1909.
Application filed August 31, 1908. Serial No. 451,097.
Toall whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN P. WEISMAN, citizen of theUnited States, residing at C0- lumbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Twine-Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to cutlery and. has special reference to twine cutters.
The chief objects of .the im rovements which form the subject matter 0 this application are :to provide a simple, efiicient and convenient device for severing cord or twine; to furnish a tool for the purpose stated that can be readily attached to a counter or other support; and to produce a device for the purpose stated havmg a proteetive housing for a cutting member the latter so arranged that it can be easily and quickly removed for the purpose of sharpenmg.
I accomplish the results in "iew by means of the device illustrated in the acccm anying drawing, forming a part of this app ication, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved twine cutter attached to a horizontal support, a fragment only of the latter being shown, and Figs. 2 and 3 are sectional views, taken on the lines 22 and 33, respectively, of Fig. 1.
Referring to the details of the drawing, the numeral 5 indicates a sheath or housing formed of a single piece of sheet metal, bent along the median line at 6 to form parallel walls or side plates 7 separated by a slight interval or slot 8. The plate is slit a short distance along said line 6 at one endand the flaps thus formed are bent at right angles with the sides 7 to form flanges 9, which are secured to any convenient support by screws 10. The sheath is provided .with a slot which extends horizontally inward from the front margin at 11 and then runs diagonally upward and backward as shown at 12, thus leaving a pendent beak or book 13. The an gles at the opening or mouth 11 are rounded above and below as indicated by 14. The cutting knife or blade consists of a thin strip of steel 15 having one edge 16 sharp. This blade is inserted between the walls 7 ol' the sheath, its back engaging the bend 6, and is fitted to slip easily into the interval 8 and 1s held firmly in place by a clamping screw 17,
. which draws the sides together, the material of which the sheath is constructed being sufficiently resilient to yield to that extent.
Below the slot 11 the side plates are connected by a rivet or in 18, which forms a stop to prevent the b ade 15 from becoming displaced laterally and also serves as a guide to direct the lower end of the blade into its proper channel while being. inserted. The diagonal portion 12 of the slot is so located relatively to the blade that the lines of direction of the edge of the blade and the front margin of the slot will intersect at an acute angle, as seen -at 19, thus a'liording an effective presentation of the edge to the cord when drawn upward into the cleft or angle 19. The twine to be cut will be held under tension in any convenient manner and then carried upward between the blade and the front margin of the slot, this method of applying the twine to the cutting edge resulting in a drawing stroke which Wlll sever the twine with a minimum application of force thus rendering the tool particularly eflectlve.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, is
A twine-cutter composed of sheet metal cut and bent to form clam ing members, and base members at one en of and at rightangles to the clamping members, said clamping members having a twine-receiving slot extending longitudinally thereof, the mouth of said slot arranged at one edge of the clamping members and having outwardly flar1ng curved edges adapted'to form a guldeway for the twine, and a knife arranged between said clamping plates below said mouth and having its cutting edge forming an acute angle with the opposite wall of said slot, and means for connecting said clamping members together and removably securing said knife in position.
In testimony whereof I allix my signature in the presence of two witnesses. 1
JOHN P. WEISMAN.
