UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED HENLEY PIHL, 0F NASVIKEN, SWEDEN.
COLLAPSIBLE LANDING-NET.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED HENLEY PIHL, a subject of the King of Sweden, and resident of Nasviken, in the Kingdom of Sweden, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Landing-Nets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to such collapsible landing nets and the like, in which the handle can be turned forward parallel with two arms, carrying the net, which arms are thereby collapsed, but when the handle is turned outward, are expanded by a cam shaped head on the handle, entering the space between the said arms. In nets arranged in accordance with this invention each of the said arms is fixed to shanks respectively of a springy fork, to which the handle is swingably connected. As the shank is turned forward parallel with the arms, the arms are forced toward each other by the elastic force of the fork. Owing to this arrangement the mechanism for expanding and folding the arms is simplified essentially, to which may be added the advantage, that the part of the fork, connecting the shanks, bears against the lower side of the handle turned outward and thus firmly holds the arms in their expanded position.
A landing net arranged in accordance with this invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, in Figure l in a plan view and in expanded position, in Fig. 2 in a plan view and folded position. Fig. 3 is a side view of the landing net in expanded position, and Fig. 4 is a transverse section through the limbs.
The arms or limbs 2, carrying the net 3, are fixed to the shanks of a fork 1 made of a springy material (metal for instance). The fork 1 is so adapted that it tends to force the arms 2 toward each other. A mounting 5, of aluminium alloy for instance, for the shaft 6 of the landing net, is pivotally connected at 1 with the shanks of the fork 1. The said mounting extends beyond the pivot at and has a head or flange 7, which like a cam acts upon the shanks of the fork 1, as the handle 6 is turned outward.
As the handle is turned outward 2'. e. is moved from the position shown in Fig. 2 to that shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the flange 7 is forced like a wedge into. the space between Specification of Letters Patent.

the shanks 0f the fork 1 and thus expands the said shanks and consequently also the arms 2.
The width of the flange is so adapted, that, when the shaft is turned outward to its outermost position and the flange 7 consequently, has been forced as far as possible into the space between the shanks of the fork, the arms 2 keep the net 3 suitably expanded, as shown in Fig. 1. The part 8 of the fork connecting the shanks is bent somewhat downward, Fig. 3, so that the shaft 6 can be turned so far outward, that it is positioned in the plane of the arms 2. When the landing net is expanded, the fork 1 bears against the lower side of the mounting, Fig. 3, so that the arms 2 with the net are firmly held in position and can not be turned downward with relation to the handle, as the landing net is used. Two re cesses may be provided in the sides of the flange 7, opposite each other, which the shanks of the 'fork engage when the arms are expanded. The landing net is folded by turning the handle inward to the position shown in Fig. 2. The shanks of the fork thus disengaged from the flange then move owing to the elastic force of the fork the arms 2 toward each other to the position shown in Fig. 2. The net is then wound around the arms 2 and the handle 6 and is tied. The landing net thus folded can easily be carried, as for instance by hanging the fork l on a hook fixed for instance in a girdle on the person, using the landing net.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In collapsible landing nets and the like the combination of a springy fork, a net, arms, which are carried by the shanks of the said fork and to which the net is fixed, a handle located between the shanks of the fork and pivotally connected with the same, and a cam piece on the handle adapted to expand the shanks when the handle is turned outward, substantially as described.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
