Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed December 2S, 1&05. Serial No. 29e-,322.
To all whom it ymay concern:
Be it knownthat l, JAMES G. liloMicnanL, a citizen of the United States, residing at lhicago, in the county oli Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful lmnovements in Rail-loints, of which the following is a specification.
My'invention 'rentes to improvements in rail joints.
The salient object of my invention is to rovide a rail joint member and wheel-guard m one integral construction, adapted and arranged, when said joint member is in )osition, for proper registration of the wheelguard thereof with a similar' wheel-guard which may be fixed to the rail, or otherwise secured, and which usually extends in either direction between joints at desirable points in track construction.
in the drawings, Figure i represents a plan View of two fragments of rails with their respective ends in abutting proximity with my joint and guard applied thereto. lt also shows the usual intermediate wheel-guard, on each side ol` my joint, and registering with the wheel-guard portion thereof. Fig. 2 is a cross section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
ln both Views the same reference numerals indicate like parts.
1 1 indicate the two abutting ends of the rails.
2-2f indicate the terminal ends of respective sections of a wheel-Guard, which may be 'properly associated wit i, or secured to the rail 1n any suitable manner, and extend lon gitudinally with the' rail intermediatel o1 the joints.
3 indicates the wheel-guard portion, or rib, ol' the joint member 4, and when in position, as shown, it registers with the usual wheelguard sections Bui, thus providing a continuous wheel-guard.
5 indicates an ordinary angle bar or 'lishplate comprising the other member ol' thc joint.
6 indicates a` fragment of a can' wheel showing the position ol the flange 7 thorlolf with relation to thewheel-guard It.
'lhc member 4 ol" thc joint is designed to he l i i I l and extends beyond the base oi the respecl. tive rails, thereby presenting an extended base sort-ace which is d V,signed to rest upon the ties whether the joint be placed in relation thereto as a centrally supported joint or as a suspended joint.
The guard rib 3 is given additional strength by the ribs il, 1i) and il which unite the base, the vertical section and the rib 3 of the member el, and which are placed preferably, one at either end and one near the middle portion thereof.
',lfl'aring thus described my invention, what l claim and desire to secine by Letters Patent, of the United States, is:
ln a rail joint the combination with the rail, of a member adapted to lie onitlie inside of the rail, an integral base and guard mein ber comprising a base underlying the rail and extending therebeyond on its outer side, a folded portion overlying the rail base, a fish plate portion extendingI from said folded p0rtion to underlie the head oi' the rail, an offset guard portion of angular shape in cross section extending' outward from and then upward beside the rail to form a flange-receiving channel, and vertical bracing webs connor-ting the oli-sot guard portion with the subjarent base portion of the said member, substantially a` and for the purpose described.
ln testimony whereof l hereunto set my j .l l
land in the presence of two witnesses.
