Description
No.894,160. PATENTBD JULY 21; 1908. 'J. MAYER.
RAIL JOINT.
APPLICATION FILED DBO.5,1907.
of the King of J OHAN MAYER, OF BRADDOGK, PENNSYLVANIA.
RAIL-J OIN T.
N 0. 894,160. Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. December 5, 1907. Serial No. 405,162.
Patented July 21, 1908.
These hook shaped ends are adapted to prevent the rails from being accidentally disconnected, and when joining the rails together, the beveled hook-sha ed ends 9 of said clamps slide over the beve ed ends 12 of the splice bars and enter into their respective openings, when said openings have been reached.
When it is desired to disconnect the rails 1 and 2, a suitable instrument such as a chisel or crow bar (not shown) can be employed to pry the hook-shaped ends of the clamps out of their openings, and permit of the rails being disconnected and pulled apart.
It is thought that the many advantages of my rail oint will be apparent to those skilled in the art of railway construction.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new, is
1. In a rail joint, the combination of rails having their web portions provided with openings, a splice bar carried by the web portion of each rai the splice bars upon the rails being oppositely disposed with respect to To all whom it may concern: j of the rails.
Beit known that I, J OHAN MAYER, asubject Hungary, residing at Braddock, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Joints, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to rail joints, and the primary object of the invention is, the provision of positive and reliable means for connecting the confronting ends of two rails, without the use of nuts and bolts as ordinarily employed in railway construction.
Another object of this invention is to provide a rail fastener of a simple and durable construction, that can be easily manipulated I to connect two rails.
The invention comprises certain novel features of construction which will be resently described, and then specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawing, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of arail joint embodying my invention, I Fig. 2 is a similar view, illustrating the rails as l disconnected, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view of rails connected in accordance with my invention.
In the accompanying drawings 1 and 2 designate rails having their web portions 3 and 4 respectivel provided with openings 5 and 6. One side of the web 4 of the rail 2 is provided with a splice bar 7, while the opposite side is provided with a resilient clamp 8 having a hook shaped end 9, this hook shaped end being beveled as at 10. The splice bar 7 and the clamp 8 are secured to the web 4 by rivets 11, and the splice bar is provided with a beveled end 12 and also with an opening 13. The rail 1 is also provided with a s lice bar 14 similar to the splice bar 7 f iihe rail 2, and a clamp 15 similar to the clamp 8 of the rail 2, but the splice bar is located upon the opposite side of the rail from that of the splice bar 7 of the rail 2. By this arrangement the splice bars 7 and 14 overlap the web portions 3 and 4 of the rails 1 and 2 and provide a rigid connection, especially when the hook shaped ends 9 of the clamps have entered the openings 13 of the splice bars 7 and 14 and the openings 5 and 6 adapted to overlie the web portion of an adjacent rail, said splice bars having beveled ends and openings adapted to register with the openings in said web portions, a clamp carried by each rail opposite the splicebars of said rails, said clamps having off-set portions terminating in beveled hook-sha ed ends for entering the openings of said sp ice bars and the openings of the web portions of said rails, substantially as described.
2. The combination of rails embodying web portions provided with openings, a splice bar carried by each rail and adapted to overlap theweb portion of the adjoining rail, each splice bar having an opening formed therein and extending in the same plane throughout, a clamp carried by each rail opposite each splice bar, said clamps having off set portions terminating in hook-shaped ends for entering the openings of said splice bars and the openings of said rails.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
J OHAN MAYER.
