Application filed September 12, 1936', Serial Trio.
b all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, Banner G. lilsinns, a citizen of the United States, residing; at Hoult, in the county of Marion. and State 5 of :West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Nut-Locl s and Rail-Braces, of which the following is a specification.
This invention contemplates an in'iproved not lock and rail brace especially designed for use at the joints between the meeting ends of railway rails and has as its primary object to provide a device of this character which may be used in connectii'in with sub stantially any conventional type of rail and formed to engage the nuts of the bolts eonneeting the rail ends for locking the said.
nuts against displacement.
The invention has a further object to provide a device of this character formed to engage beneath the treads of the rails to overlie the base flanges thereof and abut the flanges at their outer extremities for effectually bracing the rails against outward. lateral movement and consequently holding the ails of a track against spreading;
And the invention has a still further object to provide a device of this character which will be simple in constructionand which may be easily mounted in position, Uther and incidental. objects will appear as the description proceeds I "id in the draw ingswherein have EllUS f the pre ferred embodiment of the invention and, wherein similar reference characters he nate corresponding parts throughout the several views, a
Figure It is a perspective view showing my improved not lock; and rail brace ep- 40 plied at the joint between the Incetingends of coaching railway rails of conventional type, and I v lcig. 2 1s a sectional. view more particularly showing the oonstrinition or the device and the manner in ivh.
the said device is formed to brace rails against outward rnoven'ient.
In order that tin eonstraction mounting and operation of the present invention 0 be entirely clear l he slmwn the device in connection with a joint b ree meeting ends of coat-ting railw if? of conventional. type. the aid supported upon tires L11 '0 Webs, upon opposite Sp :cification of itetters )Patent.

joint hetween the rails, are fish plates 12 formed to lit beneath the rail treads with the lower edges of the said plates resting upon the base flanges of the rails. Extending through the fish plates and through the rail webs, are a plurality of bolts 13 upon which are fitted nuts 14:.
Cornin now more particularly to the subject of the present invention, a combined locking end brace member is employed ineluding a body 153 formed to lie upon the base flanges oi the rails upon the outer sides thereof, with the said body oii'set longitudinally to provide a shoulder 16 abutting the said base flanges at their outer edges with the body then extended to form an attaching Flange i7 resting upon the adjacent ties 11 of the track. At its inner extremity, the body 15 of the device is bent at substantially right angles to form an upstanding l ring flange 18 seating againstthe ailja-celi fish plate 12 upon the outer sides of the rails 10 and engaging at its upper extremity beneath the rail treads upon op- .i s or the joint between the rails. flange is, at a plurality of lo gitudinnlly spaced points formed with suitable openin s to snugly receive the nuts 14- oi" the s 13' and connecting the at- Y 17 of the device with the of the track, are a plurality hes or other suitable fastening luiiS locking flange 18 will, as will he observed, securely engage the nuts 14 of the bolts 13 for holding the said bolts against displaceinent so that I thus provide an effectual nut loci; for the l bolts. Moreover, the lock- 18 of the device is arranged. to 1 with the rail treads so that the will act as a brace, holding the rails againstoutwanl lateral movement and consequently preventing spreading of the rails of a track. in this connection, it is also to be observed that the shoulder 16 of the body 15 will cooperate with the outer edges or thebase Fanges of the rails for holding the said li ness lined with respect to each oth regards outward lateral movement. It it therefore be seen that I provide a very simple and ei'tieient construction for the purpose set forth,
substantially any conventional type of rail- Way rails. p I
Having thus described 'my inventiom what I claim and desire tovsecu're by Letters Patent is:
The combination with meeting rail ends having fish plates at the joint therebetween with the said rail ends connected by a plurality of bolts extending through the said fish plates, of a combined rail brace and locking member overlying the joint between the said rail ends, said member including a body seating against the outer sides of the base flanges of the rails and ofiset to proand a device which may be readily applied to the joints between vide a shoulder engaging the adjacent outer edges ofthe, said flanges, the body being thence extended at its outer extremity to form an attaching flange seating upon the rail ties and being bent at its inner extremity to provide an upstanding locking flange seating at its upper and lower margins against the outermost of said fish plates with the upper edge of said flange engaging beneath the rail treads to form a brace therefor with openings formed in the said flange to receive the nuts of the said bolts for locking the nuts thereon.
In testimony. whereof I affix my signature.
