Description
T. E. DIAMOND.
' ASH CAN AND OTHER ORSIMILAR REGEPTAGLE.
APPLIOATION FILED JUNE 20I 1908.
93 1 9 1 8 Patented Aug. 24, 1909.
II/Id (IIIIIIIIII 4. 'ATTOIMIE rs UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS E. DIAMOND, F MONTGLAIR, NEW JERSEY.
ASH -CAN AND OTHER OR SIMILAR RECEPTACLE.
. To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS E. DIAMOND, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Montclair,'in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ash-Cans and other or Similar Receptacles, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the-art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to ash cans and other or similar receptacles, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is composed of sheet metal formed into a cylindrical casing, one end of which is folded inwardly and radially to form a bottom for the receptacle.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms apart, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved ash can, part of the construction being in section, Fig. 2 a bottom plan view thereof, Fig. 3 a top plan view thereof, Fig. 4s a partial section on the line 41 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 a partial section on the line 55 of Fig. 3.
In the practice of my invention as shown in the drawing, I provide a can or receptacle a composed of a sheet of metal folded int-o tubular form, and the edges of which are overlapped and riveted together at a and said can is provided at the top with a reinforcing annular band 6 which is Lshaped in cross section and which is riveted thereto, and the top edge of the can or rece tacle a is folded over one part of said rein orcing band to form a bead o The bottom part of the can or receptacle is also provided with an annular reinforcing band 0 which is L-shaped in cross section and riveted to said can or receptacle as shown at 0 and the bottom d of said can or receptacle is formed by folding the end portion of the tubular body portion inwardly and radially to form sectoral members (P. In this operation the bottom sectoral members (Z are brought together as shown at (Z and formed over the adjacent edges thereof at Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 20, 1908.
Patented Aug. 24, 1909. Serial No. 439,474.
(Z are radial folds (P, the inner corner portions of which are cut away radially as shown at (Z in Fig. 3, and when the bottom has been folded in this manner the parts thereof including the sectoral members (Z and folds d are pressed firmly together, and in this operation of forming the bottom of the can it is also set inwardly or raised so as to form a depending rim portion 6.
In the operation of forming the bottom of the can as above described there is a radial seam at (Z where the parts of the bottom are overlapped and riveted together as shown at (Z and in forming the larger kind or style of cans or receptacles I preferably employ sheet steel, but in forming small cans or receptacles in this manner sheet copper tubes without seams may be employed, in which case the bottoms will be formed as herein shown and described; but my invention is not limited to the use of any particular metal in forming the cans or receptacles. It will be apparent that cans or receptacles of any preferred size may be made in this manner, and of any desired strength.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A sheet metal can which is circular in cross section and provided with a bottom formed by folding one end portion thereof inwardly and into radial sectoral parts, the meeting edges of which are overlapped by radial folds, the bottom portion of the can being also folded to form a depending flange or rim which supports the can.
2. A sheet metal can which is circular in cross section and provided with a bottom formed by folding one end portion thereof inwardly and into radial sectoral parts, the meeting edges of which are overlapped by radial folds, the inner end portions of which are cut away on radial lines.
3. A sheet metal can provided with a bottom formed by folding one end portion thereof inwardly and into radial sectoral parts, the meeting edges of which are overlapped by radial folds, said bottom being also raised so as to form a depending annular rim.
4. A sheet metal can provided with abottom formed by folding one end portion thereof inwardly and into radial sectoral as my invention I have signed my name in parts, the meeting edges of which are overpresence of the subscribing Witnesses this lapped by radial folds, said bottom being 19th day of J line, 1908.
