1.. B. WACKMAN UNITARY CHIME FOR METALLIC CONTAINERS 7 Filed Feb. 2, 1932 Patented Nov. 2 9, 1932 LOUIS B. WACKMAN, OF ST. LOUIS, MTSSOURI UNITABY CHIME FOR METALLIC GONTATNEBS Application filed February 2, 1932. Serial No. 590,426.
FFI'CE This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in a unitary chime construction for metallic containers of the class of containers which are open topped or have a full openin when the cover is removed, the primary 0 ject of the invention being to provide a chime of a one piece construction.
Another object of the invention is in providing a chime which is made integral with or is formed in the top portion of the side wall of the container.
A further object of the invention is in providing a chime for a metallic container with an improved form of reinforcement.
A still further object of the invention is in providing a specific method of bending and forming the upper or top portionof acontainer wall into a chime with means on the chime for securing a cover thereto for the container.
Other and further objects will appear in the specification and be specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, exemplifying the invention, and in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary sectional view of the upper portion of a metallic container showing this improved chime construction as forming a part of the container wall and a cover being securedin the chime.
Figures 2, 3,- 4 and 5 are fragmentary sectional views illustrating the different steps presently used in forming this improved chime on the upper portion of a container wall.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary elevation of the meeting edgesof the container wall forming a seam which is welded during construction of the container.
Figure 7 is a fragmentary sectional view illustrating the chime with an inlaid reinforcement.
In the accompanying drawing 1 designates the'metallic side wall of the container which is made from a single sheet of material and is joined on the longitudinal seam by weldin in the manner as hereinafter describe Formed integral with the upper portion of the side wall 1 is this improved chime 2 having a gasket seat 3 and a holding or securing flange 4.
' The seat 3 is for the reception of an an nular gasket 5 on which the flange 6 of a cover 7 is seated, said cover having a depressed portion 8 which is engaged within the confines of the seat 3 and in sealing the cover to the container, a split locking ring 9 which is angular shaped in cross section is engaged so that the horizontal leg 10 thereof will be forced between the flange 6 of the cover 7 and the holding flange 4 of the chime 2, the wedging action of the leg 10 of the ring 9 causing the flange 6 of the cover to compress the gasket 5 on the seat 3.
A container having a chime of this character is primarily used for shipping semisolid liquids, grease or dry materials.
The construction of this improved chime 2 is started while the material forming the side wall 1 is still in a flattened shape and while 7 in this shape, the .portion adjacent the edge of the material sheet which is to be used as the upper end of the container is outwardly bent and folded on itself as shown at 11 in Fig. 2. The next operation on the material-7 sheet forming the side wall of the container is in rolling the sheet into a cylindrical shape and the contacting edges of the cylinder formed sheet are welded as shown at 12 and 13 in Fig. 6. V
The welded cylinder is then operated on with adaptable corrugating rolls in engagement with the depending end 11a of the outwardly folded part 11 for forming an annular groove 14 in the wall 1 as shown in Fig. 3, this operation forcing the depending end or part 11a in the groove.
The cylindrical side wall 1 having the annular groove 14 is then further operated on to press the material of the groove or channel 14 together in a manner as shown in Fig.
4, thus providing the fiat gasket seat 3 which posing sides of the groove.
The next operation is carried on to provide the holding flange 4: which is done by operating on the upper portion 15 of the folded or lapped portion 11 of the side wall 1 for rolling the upper portion 15 into a right angular position as shown in Fig. 5, this operation concluding the several operations described and shown with respect to Figs. 2, 3,
4 and 5 for providing this improved unitary chime of a U-shape in cross section compris ing a gasket seat 8, a holding flange 4 and a joining wall 16 for the seat 3 and flange 4.
With further regard to Fig. 6, the welding of the meeting edges of the side wall 1 of the container as shown at 12, is extended the vertical length of the side wall, over the folded portion 11 and terminating at the upper edge of the folded portion. The welding 13 is carried on over the meeting edgeson the inside surface of the wall 1 for an approximate distance as indicated between the dotted hozizontal lines. This is occasioned by reason of the fact that the welding shown at 12 will not penetrate sufiiciently through the double thickness provided by'the folded portion 11 and therefore the welding 13 for the distance shown, is made for providing a sealed tight seam particularly through the gasket seat 3.
The disclosure of Fig. 7 is similar to that shown in Fig. 5, with the exception that a U-shaped reinforcing member 17 is interposed for providing a heavier and stronger gasket seat 3a, holding flange 4a and a joining wall 16a, in the event that it is desired to provide a strong chime for relatively large containers.
Obviously constructioiial modifications of the device are possible without departing from the spirit of the present invention and therefore it is to be understood that it is not necessary to limit the invention by the terms used in the foregoing description excepting such as the state of the art may require.
