JOSEPH LUPPIIl'O, F RIIDGEWOOD, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO LUPPINO DAVENPORT COMPANY,
OFNEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
' SWINGING- COUCH-BED.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March s, 1909, SerialNo. 481,970.
To all whom it may concern:
.Be it known that I, JosnrH LUPPINO, a of Italy, residing in Ridgewood, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new, and useful Improvements in Swin Couch-Beds, of which the followingis a V specification.
- The present improvement relates to couch beds, and more particularly to that class of couch beds which may be readily transformed into a single or a double couch or bed, the object of t e invention being to .provide an improved couch bed made up of ,a pair of swmgin sections, one a reversible section, and whlch bed may be opened or closed by the swinging of a mattress frame by means of which also the'cu'shion forming the seat of the bed when the structure is'in the form of a couch will be reversed to form the stuffed mattress of the reversible section.
A further object of the present improvement is to provide a couch bed of the-char acter described in which the metallic fabrics structure is in the form of a double bed, but spaced apart one below the other to form a storage space for the bed clothing when the structure is in the form of a couch, and also to permit the top metallic fabric to be swung ,upward from the under fabric when the structure is in the form of a couch to facilitate the placin of the bed clothing'in or removal thereof from the storage space.
In the drawings accompanying and forming part of this'specification, Fi re 1 is an end view-of this improved coucli b bdfolded Fig. 2 is an end view of the same, showing two positions,one in dotted lines, of the-bed sections as they are opened; Fig. 3' is an end view of the bed when completely opened;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of this improved o couch bed partly opened; and Fi 5 and 6 are detail P views of portions 0 the structure.
Similar characters of reference indicate correspondin parts throughout the differ: ent figures o thedrawings. I his improved couch bed-comprises, inthe embodiment shown, a main or supportin frame or section. 2 comprising a pan of en frameqfland 4 connected by suitableside bars may
or rails 5 and 6, one or both of -which be braced by braces I from the end Eacbgei d frame maybe 1 pattached. In the e will not interfere with the for the in any suitable manner, but in the embodiment shown it is of tubular construction and comprises a cross bar 9 having integrally connected therewith suitable legs or supports 10, usually provided with casters 11. These legs -are shown connected by a pair of end or cross bars 12 and 13; Connected to this main frame, through the medium of one section, is a pair 15, one of which, as 14, will be herein designated, for the present purposes, as the overturning or reversible section and the other, as 15, the extensible section.
section 14 comprises a pair of end or metallic fabric supporting barsl-G, to which some suitable yielding) mattresssupport is yieldin mattress support is in the form of a meta lic fabric 17 connected by suitable coil springs 18 with the mattress supporting bars 16, which are shown as of angle iron formation and may be connected by length wise extending bracing bars 19, 20. In the, of the two sections will be level when the em bodiment shown one of these bracing bars, as 19, is of drop formation, whereby it yielding ofzthe metallic fabric when weight is laced thereon. The bracing bar 20. may a so be of the same formation, but in view of the fact that it is located at the rear of the bed, which is usually placed against the wall, this is not essential and it is therefore shown as straight and of an le iron formation. The end or metallic faric supportin bars 16 are-connected to bent or curved bars 21, 22, one at each end, each of which is pivoted centrally thereof to its cross bar 12 or 13 of the end frame. .The bars 22 may beof various formations, butare shown downwardly curved purpose of raising the metallic fabric somewhat above the cross bars 12 and 13 of theend frames, which cross bars may be bent slightly in the direction of their length, or the bars 21, 22 bent sli htly in the direction of their length inwar thereby to facilitate the swinging movement of the reversible section.
of swinging sections 14 and The overturning or reversible frame orodiment shown this I In practice suitable rests or supports are "provided for the inner ends of the reversible section to rest .upon when the structure is in the formof a'double bed, these supports24 bein carried-bythev-cross bars 12 and 13 oft e end fianies filand 4 and located in positionhfer the of "the reversible .sec-
main section.
' connectin rod these catches be-unlocked simi'ilta-v tion to rest upon, the rear side of the rethe section, for supporting the rear side of the reversible section. In the resent instance each of these catches iss own as a swinging member 26 pivoted to the rear of the reversible section 14 and each so formed shifted as it? that -it will be automatically strikes the underside of the side bar 6 of'the These catches are held in their normal locking position by' means of a coil spring 27 attached to one end of a 28. As it is desirable/that both of neously, they are connected by the rod 28, which has a handle 29 at one end of the bed for shifting the catches to unlock the overturning or reversible section. At the opposite end of the bed one of the catches is pros vided with a lever 30 for releasing the catches should the user be at that end of the bed. A A r When the oi erturning. or reversible section 14 is swung into its level or bed-forming position the catches will automatically. en-
gage the top of the side bar 6 and maintain the rear side of the overturning section in its proper levelposition, at which time the front side thereof will rest on the supports hereinbefore referred to whereby the sectien is supported'at all our corners in a manner readily understood.
Hinged to the front of the overturning section by means of depending members or straps 31, 32, a pair at each end of the bed, is the extensible frame or section 15 of the bed. This extensible section comprises a pair of end or metallic fabric supporting bars 33, preferably of angle iron formation, having secured thereto at their front ends supports or legs 34 provided with casters 35, which casters at all times rest upon the fioor and thus support the front ends of the extensible section-when the structure is in the form of a couch, the sections being otherwise supported in their proper level positions by the reversible section. The legs 34 are suitably connected by side bars'36 Stretched between the mattress supporting bars 83 of the extensible section is a metallic fabric 37. Any suitable yielding mattress supporting means could be used instead of -the metallic fabric shown if preferred.
The length of thedepending members 31, 32 determines the distance one metallic fabric will be above the other when the bed is in the form of a couch, and therefore determines the space which may be devoted to the storage of bed clothing, this space being equivalent to substantially twice the length of one of-such depending members. The metallic fabric supporting bars or end frames cit the extenslble section are shown connectlthis,
ed at their rear ends by drop formed braces or bars 38 for the purpose of stiflening the extensible section.
In a bed such as hereinbefore described, it will be obvious that the reversible section must carry a stuffed mattress or cushion, whichwould be underneath the bed when the latter is in the form of a couch, and in this position immediatelyabovethe floor it would become dusty and dirty. Not only but it will also be observed that the stuffed mattress or cushion carried by the extensible section would form the couch seat when the bed is in the form of a couch and also form the stufi'ed mattress of one section, the extensible section when the bed is in the form of a double bed, so that the same side of the mattress would have to be utilized both as a couch seat and as the top of one half of the bed, which is objectionable. Furthermore, ifthe stuffed mattress is carried by the reversible section, obviously the weightthereof is materially increased,-
so-that the operation of the bed becomes more difficult of manipulation by a woman.
Moreover, ina bed such as described it is necessary that it be opened or closed by grasping the front of the extensible section midway of the length thereof, whereas it is frequently desirable to operate the same from, the end of the structure.
To do away with' the serious disadvantages mentioned, I have provided a swinging mattress frame comprising a swinging bar 40 havin end bars 41 and 42 pivotally connecte at the rear of the extensible section 15 and connected by links 43 adjacent to the rear of the main section or supporting frame This swinging mattress frame carries one half 44 of a stuffed mattress, to
which it may be fixedly connected at its outer edge, the other half 45 of which is fixedly This mattress may be an ordinary book mattress. When the bed is inthe form of a couch it will beobserved that the side 46 of thefoldin mattress is uppermost and. forms the seat 0 the couch. When, however, the
secured to the extensible section.
str'ricture is in the formof a double bed, it I will be observed that the opposite side 47 of the folding mattress is uppermost and levelwit h the stuffed mattress 45 of the extensible section, so that by' means of thisswinging mattress carrying frame not only are the swinging sections of the bed operated into open or closed position, but"the stufied mattresses are opened and closed, so
that the same side of the stuifed mattress which forms the s'e'at'of the couch is not also ,used to sleep upon. Moreover, both halves of the stuffed mattress are carried on top of the bed,-where it can be readily covered with a couch cover,-and not one of them on the underside of the reversible section and near the floor, where it would quickly become dusty and dirty and where it could not be covered with a couch cover. Furthermore, this organization obviates .the necessity, as
hereinbefore stated, of carrying one half of mattress frame not .only doesaway with all,
the disadvantages specified, but does not materially increase the expense of manufac ture, since no additional stufied mattress is necessary and therefore the only additional cost is the provision of the swinging frame and'links, a comparatively small item.
operating this bed, when thestructure is in the form of a couch bed, as in Fig. 1,
it will be observed that'the reversible section has been reversed, while the extensible ing the overturnin to form bed, the bed clothing is the storage space in .the' manner described tion shown in full'lines inFi section is aboveit with the two halves of thefolding stufied mattress resting thereon. In this position of the of the extensible section may be swun ward on its hin versible section g p e connect-ion with the reor the placing or removal -of the bed clothing in the storage space,
after which-theextensible section may be swung. down to close the storage space and form the couch. When, however, it is dethe; structure into a double first removedfrom and the swlnging mattress frame grasped-at either end and thrown upon the vrear of the extensibe section is lifted and such section pushed forward on its casters upon the floor, this operation reverssection upon-its pivots until the metallic to the upper side and level with the extensible section, in which position the sprin actuated catches engage. the side barlo the main section and lock such reversible section in its level position and in position to-receive on top thereof thes winging mattress frame and its stuffed mattressin a manner which will be readily understood, that side of the stuffed mattress which forms the seat of the couch when the structure is in the form of a divan resting upon the reversible section while the inner side of such stufi'ed mattress is in position tosleep upon.
To transform the bed into a couch, it is, merely necessary to release the catches from either end .of the bed and throw forward the swinging mattressvframe, whereby the reversible section will be turned over on its ivots and draw in the extensible section to form the couch, as shown in Fig. 1.'
It will be observed that the present constructionis such that the frames orsections may be made entirely of metal throughout, thus providing astructure.

connected to a pair of operative to transform the structure into a backward to the os'i-i '2, w ere-s abric thereof is brought -main frame,
metal formed structure. I In practice the metallic'fabrics-of the extene be joined together or formed as one if preferred'without in any way changing the It, will also be observed that in the present improvement the extensible section rests upon the reversible section and is not overturned or reversed therewith, so that it is not swung underneath the reversible section when the structure in the form of a c0ucl1 the reversible section-being -the only-one that is reversed. In consequence this the extensible section may have its f legs or feet fixed or stationary 'so that they can always rest and move upon the floor, thus insuring a more practicable structure one that canybe more easily manipulated by a woman. Further, it will also be observed that the swinging frame or section swings on to the reversible section when the structure is in the form of a double bed, and not on to the extensible sec?- tion, and therefore swings toward and rests on the extensible section itself when the structure is in the form of a couch.
