PUZZLE.

To all 'whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HARRY W. CADwnLL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of lVayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Puzzles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

The invention relates particularly to apuzzle, especially designed in the present instance for advertising purposes, and it consists inthe novel construction of a device of this character, in the arrangement and combination of its various parts, and in certain details of construction as will be more fully hereinafter pointed out.

In the drawings-Figure l is a view in front elevation of an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a. similar view, showing the parts in a different position; Fig. 3 is a front elevation of one of the members of the device; Fig. el is a vertical central section through a modilied form; and Figs. 5, 6 and T are views similar to Fig. l showing further modifications.

In general, the device or appliance is composed of complementary members arranged one upon the other for relative movement, one of the members being provided with a plurality of characters, and the other with a less number of apertures or other suitable sight openings adapted to register with the characters, the latter being so arranged upon their member that collectively they convey no meaning, but upon proper shifting of t-he members in relation to each other the characters displayed through the openings will be comprehensible.

In the several figures of the drawing with the exception of Fig. 7 the complementary members are in the form of disks A and B, pivoted one to the other centrally, as at C, for relative rotary movement. Upon the disk A are arranged a series of characters D, preferably letters, as shown in Fig. 3, which extend entirely about the peripheral portion of the member. The member B is provided with a series of openings, as E, separated one from another by intervening portions F of the disk body. The openings are seven in number in the figure referred to, and are of a size to display in each instance one of the letters of the series, while the intervening portions F are of suihcient width to cover a letter, the arrangement being such Specification of Letters Patent.

that alternate letters of the series will be exhibited.

One arrangement of the characters or letters is clearly shown in Figs. i, 2 and 3. The positioning of the characters is such that in the relative position of the members as shown in Fig. l the letters displayed spell the name of the State Florida, all other letters in the series being concealed by the intervening portions of the disk and the disk body. Upon further rotation of the disk B in relation to the member A, the letters New York appear, and upon still further relative rotation of the parts the letters of the States wWyomingP Indiana, Georgia 7 and Alabama will be exhibited successively. During' the relative rotation of the disks, however, as will be obvious from the arrangement of the characters set forth, various letters will be exhibited through the several openings in the disk 3 intermediate the relative positions of the disks when the names of the States are exhibited, but no words are formed by these letters, so that the meaning of the characters is unintelligible.

In Fig. 5 a slightly modified form of appliance is shown, but two openings a and o being formed in the member B, with a single intervening portion c. A suitable series of letters or other characters, as CZ, appears upon the peripheral portion Aof the complementary member A. In this construction, letters forming more than one word may appear in the complementary openings in place of the single letters asv previously described.

I have shown in Fig. 6 a still further modification wherein but a single opening c is formed in the member B, so that upon properly shifting the latter member in relation to its complementary disk section an entire word will be displayed. Finally, in Fig. 7 members G H are shown mounted one upon the other for relative longitudinal movement, instead of rotary movement as in the previous construction referred to. The arrangement of the letters and openings may be similar to that previously set forth. Upon the body portion of the disk, advertising matter of any suitable character may be placed.

In Fig. l a construction of the appliance is shown similar to that illustrated in Fig. 1, with the exception that a third disk, as B', is pivoted to the member A on the side opposite the member B. This may be provided with openings similar to the openings in the member B, and the side of the disk A adjoining the member B may have printed peripherally thereon letters or other characters similar to those appearing upon its opposite side.

It will be readily seen from the description of the appliance that the construction of the parts and the arrangement of the characters is such that in one or more predetermined relative positions of the members comprehensible subject-matter Will be exhibited through the sight openings, While in other positions of the parts the matter viewable through the sight openings Will be unintelligible. That l claim as my invention is,-

l. An appliance of the character described, consisting of superimposed relatively movable members one provided with a series of characters, and the other with openings registering with the characters, the latter being' so disposed that in certain relative positions of the members a Word or phrase Will be exposed through the openings, While in other positions of the parts the exposed characters will be collectively unintelligible.

2. An appliance of the character set forth, consisting of superin'iposed relatively movable members, one having' arranged thereon a continuous series of le ters and the other a series of openings of less number than the letters and registering with the latter, the letters being' so arranged that in certain relative positions of the members a Word or Words Will be exposed through the-openings, .While in other positions of the members the exposed letters will convey no meaning.

An appliance of the character set forth, consisting of two superimposed centrally pivoted disks, one provided with a circumyferential series of letters and the other with a series of spaced openings of less number than and registering with the letters, the letters being so arranged in the series that collectively they will convey no meaning, but in certain relative positions of the men bers letters forming Words Will be successively exhibited through the said openings.

5. An appliance ofthe character described, consisting of superimposed relatively movable members, one member being provided `with a series of characters, the series being unintelligible in the aggregate, but ineluding a plurality of characters that when displayed to the exclusion of the remainder of the series portray intelligible matter, and the other member being fashioned to disclose said plurality of characters upon a eertain relative position of the -members AWhile concealing the remainder of the series.
