CHARLES A. DRUCKLIEB, OF GRIMES HILL, STATEN ISLAND, NEW YORK.
DETACHABLE AND GOLLAPSIBLE TIP FOR CIGARETTEB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 17, 1909.
Application med laren 14, 190s. serial No. 421,035.
To all 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. DRUCK- LIEB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grimes Hill, Staten Island, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable and Colla )sible ips for Cigarettes, of which the followmg 1s as eciiicatlon.
'ps or mouthpieces for cigarettes have been almost invariably applied as a constituent 'part of the cigarette. They have consisted of strips of various materials, including cork, paper and the like secured to and forming a permanent part of the cigarette.
Holdersfor cigarettes and the like have been made of various materials and shapes, some cylindrical, others conical. In all such cases the holder has been made of such stilil and rigid material as to permanentl hold its sha e and vhas been com aratively large and bu y and not collapsib e. My invention is not to be included 1n the latter class of devices employed for holding ,ci arettes or cigars, but is a mouthpiece or tip therefor, pure and simple.
My mouthpieces are so constructed that they may be packed in quantities, corresponding in number, preferably, to the number of cigarettes in the box, and held therein in a `collapsible condition so that they may occupy comparatively little space in the box, and may be used each one sin ly and individuall for a cigarette and t rown away when t e smoker is finished with the cigarette. I so construct the tips that they will take the shape of an elongated coneV so that they may lbe packed in reverse position in the cigarette My invention consists in the article of manufacture and other details of improve.- ment hereinafter described and further pointed out in the claims. i
In the drawings forming part of the specilication Figure lis a perspective view showing a box of cigarettes, and tips held in the cover rial, but I prefer that the blank 1 /of which the ti is to be made be composed of' an outer ayer of thin cork 2 and an tinner layer 3 of paper or other material to which the cork strip is permanently secured by an adhesive materia In order to give the tip the conoidal contour, it is cut in the shapeshownin 3. In order to insure that the tip may be co apsed, I preferably, either by scoring, indenting, bending, or 1n any other desired Way, form two bending-lines 4-5 (Fi 3) on the inside of the tips. The blank is t en preferably placed over a former and the edges 6-7 overlapped, as shown at Fig. 4, and permanently secured together by adhesive material. tendency to colla se at very light pressure, or is substantia y collapsed. To use the same, the tip may be taken between the fmgers and when it W open, and assume its substantially tubular form, and then the cigarette may be inserted as shown in '6.
It is clear that when the user is finished with the cigarette, it and the tip can be thrown away.
The capacity for collapsing the conoidal or conical tip is such as to allow of a quantity of them bemg packed in an unobstructivel manner in the lbox containing the cigarettes. In Fig. 1 a series of ti s are shown placed within the cover a of t e box b. To illustrate the use of the tips in this connection, the box is shown containing 12 cigarettes and the cover 12 individual tips. As shown, two tips in a collapsed condition are laid over each other and each series of cigarettes abut edge to edge in a reverse osition so that their conical or pyramida form can be availed of to t into a rectangular space. At C is a strip of paper or the like, both ends of which are secured to the sides of the lid of the box, holding the tips confined in position therein. Instead of confining the tips within the lid of the box they may be acked in any other suitable way withinthe ox.
Having described my invention, I claim: 1. As an improvedarticle of manufacture, an attachable and detachable tip for cigarettes and the like, the same being of conical form, colla sible upon itself in the direction of its len tliv and having oppositely disposed bending ines 'adapted by pressure thereon to cause the tip to open and assume its conical form and to snu ly embrace a c' arette. 2. As an improvecI article of man acture,
The tip thus formed has a lressed on the bending-lines the cigarette tip herein described comprising a plurality of layers of material disosed in conical form and having opposed ending lines permitting it to e collapsed u on itself and by pressure on said bendin llnes to open and assume its tubular conica form with a tendency to close and firmly grip the end of a cigarette.
3. As a commercial package, a box comprising a main body and a cover, cigarettes 1n the main body, a series of tubular conical tips for said cigarettes inversely packed together in collapsed form Within the cover,
and means for holding the tips in position and in their collapsed form.
As a commercial package, a box comprismg a cover and a main body, c' arettes 1n the mam body, a series of lattene tubular, and conical tips for'said cigarettes inversely packed wit in the cover, and a strip extending rom the :flanges of the cover for retalnmg said tips in place and out of contact Wltln said cigarettes. p
