Beit known that I, SAMUEL PRAGER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Transparent-Slide Folding Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The present invention relates to certain novel and useful improvements in boxes or other receptacles, and has particular application to the structure or formation ofthe top or cover of such boxes.

One of the main objects of the present invention is to construct a box of the character described which may be provided with a transparent top of any suitable material-such as celluloid, gelatin, mica, or the like-the translucent material being retained securely in place on said top without the use of any fastening substance or means,such as cement, glue, or other adhesive material.

A further objectof the invention is to so slit the blank during the process of its formation that when it is made into a complete box runways or guide-strips will be formed in the top portion thereof for the reception and retention of the aforesaid transparent material.

I have also in View the construction of a box of the type referred to which mayibe folded or attened when it is desired to ship the boxes from place to place without in any way injuring the structure or the top thereof.

While I have shown and herein described one particular form or embodiment of my invention, I wish it to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise details shown therein, as there can be changes and modifications in some respects Without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrilicing any of the advantages thereof.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in allthe gures.

Figure l is a plan View of a blank adapted to be formed into a box, said blank having an opening therein, the runways or guideways for the transparent top portion being cut longitudinally of said opening. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the outside or jacket portion of the box embodying my improvements. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view of a box embodying my improvements, showing the manner of securingr the transparent top therein; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a receptacle embodying my improvements.

Referring now to the accompanying drawings, wherein an embodiment of my invention is delineated, l indicates a blank or sheet from which the cover of my improved box is formed, said sheet being of pasteboard, si rawboard, paper, or metal, (shown in the present instance of rectangular form,) the said blank or sheet being scored transversely, as at 2, whereby such sheet may be bent into approximately the form shown in Fig. 2. 'lhe material of the blank between two of the scored lines is cut out to form an opening 3, and arranged parallel With the longitudinal sidesV of this opening are slits 4 and 5, which are preferably a little longer than the length of the opening, the construction being such that runways or guideways 6 and 7 are formed. A transparent cover or sheet 8, of any suitable material-such as mica, Celluloid, gelatin, or the like-is then inserted in the top portion in such manner that its longitudinal edges are supported by the tracks, runways, or guideways 6 and 7, and its transverse end portions are supported by the edges 9 and 10, forming the end walls of the opening 3. This construction is clearly shown in Fig. 2. It is of course to be understood that this transparent sheet may be inserted to cover the blank-o pening while the blank is in its dat positionthat is, before being folded to form the boxand the openings and slits may be also cut. at the time of the formation of said blank. For the purpose of more securely retaining the transparent material in position in said guideways slits l2 and 13 are formed adjacent to' said opening transversely of the body l, as shown in the drawings, and the transparent sheet is formed with a tongue l-t at each end, said tongues being adapted to enter the slits and be held securely therein. After the blank has been properly cut and scored it is formed into substantially the shape shown in Fig. 2- in the present instance a parallelogram--and after the ends of the blank are pasted or ICO otherwise secured together the sliding cover is ready for the reception of the containing portion l1 of the box.A

With a box constructed as hereinbefore described it will be apparent that the portions of the transparent top thereof may be easily and quickly assembled without the use of paste, glue, or other fastening means, and the formation of the slits in the blank permit the box to be readily folded for shipping Without removing the transparent top therefrom.

It will be seen that a box embodying my improvements forms a very neat and eEective means for displaying the goods therein, as they may be readily examined through the transparent covering without opening the box, the contents at the same time being always protected from dust or other injurious matter. It is further to be observed that in a box of this character the slits are out and a transparent top may be inserted when the blank is in the condition as hereinbefore stated, and the edges may then be joined by glue or fastened by machinery or the like. This construction enables the slide to move freely in its surrounding casing or covered portion, and there will be no interruption caused by humps or inequalities formed by adhesive material, as is generally .the case in boxes of this type.

While I have shown and herein described my improvements as applied to a slide folding box, it will of course be evident that such improvements may be applied to ordinary hinged covered boxes orany type of displayboxes.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A box formed of a blank having an opening therein, and having slits cut longitudinally of said opening, andextending a short distance beyond the opening, whereby guide- Ways longer than the opening are formed, and a sheet of transparent material held over said opening by the guideways, substantially as set forth.

2. A box formed of a blank having a top portion thereof scored to enable the blank to be bent into shape, said blank having an opening formed therein, guideways of greater length than the opening formed adjacent to said opening, and a sheet of transparent material of relatively greater size than said opening removably secured in said guideways, substantially as set forth.

3. A box formed of a blank having an opening cut therein, said blank having slits cut adjacent to the edges of said opening Whereby guideways are formed, and a sheet 0f material forming a portion of the covering ofthe box removably held in said guideways, said sheet having a tongue adapted to engage with the body portion of the blank, whereby to prevent the accidental removal of said sheet, substantially as set forth.

4. A box formed of a blank, said blank having an opening therein, longitudinal tracks or guideways being formed by slits cut in the blank longitudinally at the sides of the opening, short slits being also cut transversely of the blank at points adjacent to the ends of the opening, and a sheet of transparent material having its longitudinal edges heldin the runways, said material being provided with tongues adapted to enter the aforsaid short slits, substantially as set forth.
