MOSES H. TOPPING, OF FLAT RIVER, MISSOURI.
OBSTETRICAL PAD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 10, 1909.
l Application filed January .22, 1909. Serial No. l73,616.
T o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MosEs I-I. ToPPrNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Flat River, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Obstetrical Pad, v
of which the following is such ya full, clear, and exact description as will enable any one skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in 'liexible obstetrical pads, its object being to provide an obstetrical pad particularly adapted to be usedin obstetrical cases, and one which, although large enough to hold the fetus and other parturitive excretions, will nevertheless have improved means for securing the drainage of fluids from the pad.
My bed pad is constructed chiefly of flexible waterproof material, its parts being combined as hereinafter more particularly described and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a plan view of an obstetrical pad constructed 1n accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross section of the pad along the line X X of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a cross section along the line Y Y in Fig. 2.
Like marks of reference referto similar parts in the several views of the drawings.k
The bottom of the pad l1 is a sheet of flexible material to the edges of which is attached an inflatable rim 4. This rim may be inflated by means of air or liquid introduced through the valve 7 and thus forms a dam around the edges of the pad to retain the iiuids. Near the center of the ad is an opening for drainage to which the rain pi e 6 is connected. This connection may be made by any suitable means but preferably by means of a threaded nut 12 which binds the bottom of the pad toa shoulder carried by the drain pipe. This drain pipe is of small diameter, lies adjacent tothe under surface of the pad, and is sufficiently rigid to prevent any ressure fromabove fromobstructing the rainage. It will be noted that the drainage opening is` located in the center of the pad Vwhich will `ordinarilyV be the lowest point when the patient is reclining thereon.
For the purpose of concentrating the liquids and further facilitating drainage, I disose on the under side of the pad an inflatable tube 5 which extends around the center of the pad but which incloses a smaller space than the rim 4. This tube is inflatable through the valve 8. When the patient is reclining with the central part of the body within the space inclosed by this tube, there will be a decided `sloping of the central part of the pad toward the drainage opening, and thus all liquids will be readily drained out, any overfiow to the outer surface of the pad being easily returnable to the central vportion by merely lifting the edges of the pad.
To the more rigid part of the drain pipe I attach an ordinary rubber tube 10 to carry the drainage to a convenient receptacle. The drainage tube during operation will act as a Siphon andmake the drainage perfect even though, on account of depression of the bedding, the center of the pad is lower than the edge.
I-Iaving fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
l. In an obstetrical pad, the combination with a sheet of flexible material forming the bottom of said pad, of an inflatable rim forming the sides and ends of said pad, and an inflatable tube attached to the bottom of said pad between the rim and center thereof and extending entirely around thecenter.
2. In an obstetrical pad, the combination with a sheet of flexible material forming the bottom of said pad, of an inflatable rim forming the sides and ends of said pad, an inflatable tube attached to the bottom of said pad `between the center and rim thereof, and a detachable drain pipe entering said pad centrally from the bottom. p
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and aflixed my seal in the presence of the two subscribing witnesses.
