HARRY ZIMMERMAN, OF FREMONT, OHIO.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 3, 1909.
Application fi1ed January "i, 1907. Serial N0. 351238 T0 (all wh0m mag concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY ZIMMERMAN, a citizen 01 the Unied States, residing ab Fremont, in the county 0f Sandusky and Stute of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shutter BOWers, of Which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to shutte1 bowe1s and consists 0f a sil1 plate hzwing a shoulder, anal a bracket provided Wih a hinged latch having a plurality 0f shou]ders, und otherwise constructed as fully set forth hereinafter so 2L-S to permit the shutte1 to be firmly secu1ed in its closed position, eicher aginst 01 at a distance from the face of the sil1, as fully set 1 forth hereinafcer and as illustrated 111 ehe acoompanying drawing, in Whi0h:
Figure 1 is a tmnsverse sectionztl elevation showing a sill und a part 0f a shutter and illusmting 1ny improved device in conneotion therewith; Si*ig. 2 is a perspeotive view of the sill and shutter and fastening device; und ig. 3 a perspective view showing the si11 plate Wih bowing openings.
A represents die sil1 and B the shutter or hinged sash.
C is the si1l plate Which, as snown, h-as a single shoulder x und D represents the 1atch Whi0h is provided with trunnions 2, 2 adapted to sockets at the sides of an opening 3 in a bmoket- E Whi0h is secured to the shucter B 111d h-as a hand grasp by means of which itmay be seized t0 dmw the shutter inward.
The latch instead 0f having a single shoulder, as usual, is provided with a plurality of projections, two 5, 6 being shown in the drawing, each having a shoulder adapted to engage the shoulder x 01" oho sill plate C, und While the projection 6 is adapted for ehe normal engagement when the shutter is set closed against the sill, the projecion 5 is so arranged as to hold the shutter firmly in plane in case it warps t0 an extent t0 prevent the projection 6 from engaging the shoulder of the si1l p1ate, While it fu1ther serves in case the1e is 110 such warping, t0 enable the shutter t0 be sei; slightly open if desired.
It has been found t0 be frequently the esse that where the sill planes and latohes am adapted t0 engage perfeotly when first put in place, the warping of ehe shutter interferes With this engagement and there then is no means of looking ehe shutuer in its closed 3 the latoh may be which the hooked zontal position is position. By the above arrangement I avoid this objection.
The above described devices may be used without the usua1 braoe 10d, but where it is employed oho said 1od G is pivoted to a bmoke H upon the shutter as shown, and provided with a Socket y in end of the brace 1od may the shutte1 is closed o1 Some Inea1ls fo1 preventing descending below a horidesimble, und I have shown a lip 7 011 t-he bracket E f01 supporting the latch. The sill plaue n1ay also be provided with openings at suitable distanoes t0 reoeive be end 0f the bmoe rod G when the shutter is to be bowed in different positions', as shown in Fig. 3.
The projection 01' Ing 9 011 the sill plate has an inclined outs1 face, and each Ing 5, 6 has an inner inclined face so that when the shutter is closed the latte1 Will lift until 011e of its projections passes over the lug 9, when the l-atch Will d1op in engagement Wih the si]1 la'ie.
J ithout limiting myself to the precise constauotion and armngement oft parts shown, E olaim as my invention:
1. The combination in a shutter bower, of a hooked brace rod, a sil1 plate hzwing a shoulder x and adapted for attachment to the sill, a bracket E adapted f01' attachment t0 ehe shutter, a latch D having a socket y, Wifih an inner bearing for the end of the rod, sind latch being hinged to said bracket and adapted to engage the shoulde1 of the sil1 plate, and means for holding the bracket in a horizontal osition.
2. The combination in a shutter bower of a hooked brace rod connected with the shutte1, a si1l plate having an inc]ined face, a shoulder and openings to receive the hook 0f the b1ace rod, a, brackeo attached to the shutter, and a latch. hinged to tl1e bracket to swing vertically and provided Wih an inc1ined end und a plurality 0f projections to engage said shoulcler.
In testimony whereof I affix in presence 0f 13W0 witnesses.
HARRY ZIMMERMAN.
