Description

initrd attains @sind @Mira RICHARD A. PARsoNsOF CLINTON, IOWA, AssIGNoR To HIMsELF ANDTENBROCK a NoYEs, or sAME PLACE.l
Letters Patent No. 92,996, dated July 27, 1869.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD A. PARsoNs, of the city ofOlinton, in the county of Clinton, in the State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Guides for Gang-Saw Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying'A drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of myinvention consists in so constructing and' arranging thevback and front guides on a sawgate, that as the constant wear lets the lgate Work loose, the face or frontguides may be quickly, uniformly, and securely tightened' against the saw-gate, and adjusting it correctly, without having to lit in thin pieces,'-that are a constantannoyance.
To enable others to fully understand my invention, that they may construct and use it, I will describe its construction and operation.
First', I will explain the drawing, and then more minutely describe it in detail. l
Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing all the parts necessary to explain my invention. l
A A represent the fender-posts, to be cast-iron.
l B B B B represent inclined cast-iron pieces,4 fitted on to the fender-posts A A.
O C C O represent the iront or face-guide.
D43 represent the back or V- guide.
E E E E represent oil-cup, or a hole in top end of guides, to put oil, for lubricating the guides.
F represents the saws.l s G G represent the cross-bars to saw-gate.-
.H H represent the stilesor side to sawgte. vJ J J J represent pieces bolted to gate, to Wear against the guides. A
K KK K represent adjusting-rods, fitted with tightening-nuts.
'P P P P P P P P P P P P represent arm-pieces, bast on the front guide-pieces C O O O, and are fitted tolthe incline-pieces B B B B, as shown.
R R represent a stay-piece on fender-posts, to secure the adjusting-rods K K K K to.
I construct the fender-posts of cast-iron, having a square plane surface on the face, to receive. the incline. pieces AB B B B.
These inclines are constructed with a 'slot through them, to allow the holt to pass through that confines the front guide C, by the arm -pieces P P P, toits place.
'Theback or V- guides are secured to their places by stays bolted to or cast on fender-posts.
All the guides are constructedwith a receptacle for oil. A small opening from the oil-'chamber to the wearing-surface of theguides allowsvthe oil to pass out and oil the necessary parts.
After being used for some time, the wearing-parts, from the constant friction on them', lbecome worn away, 'and the gate is too loose, audit becomes necessary to tighte'n the guides. "To do this, loosen the boltsthat coniiue the front guides C O O'O, which pass through the arm-pieces P P, &c.', into the fender-post.; 'Then adjust the nuts on the rods K K K K, so as to draw the incline pieces B B, at bottom of gate, up toward the centre, and the inclines B B, 'at top o'f gate, down toward the centre, the slots in these pieces allowing them .to move, while the bolt remains -in its place.
It will be seen, that by moving the inclines as above, that the face-guides will 'close down to the gate as much as the angle of the in cline differs from the seat .of thesepieces on the fender-posts, and, by'means of the rods K K K K, and their adjusting-nuts, on the stay-piece R, the exact amount of tightening necessary may be 'quickly done. After having moved the inclines the required distance, tighten up the bolts that confine the arm-pieces P P P P P- P PP P P P P, and, by them, the face-guides O C C O, and the object is accomplished, without having to adjust with A small bits of leather, tin, or somethingelse, as in the ordinary Way.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination and arrangement of the fender- 'postsA A, the adjustable inclined pieces B B B B,
the varms P P P P P P P P P P P P, supporting. and
fixing the guide-bars 0 OJO O, when constructed and anan'ged substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth. RICHARD A.PARSONS. y Witnesses:
EDWARD P. TEN BBoEcK, C. D. Kuri/IAN.
