` y PETERWEYHRIOH, OF SAME PLAGE. I' l Letters Patent No. 975955, dated December 14, 1869.
l. n .n n
The Schedule referret to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
State of Illinois, have invented a Device for Tightening and'Directing Belts for Machinery; and do hereby declare that the following is afull, vclear,.and exact description thereof', reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specicatiou," in which like letters of reference lrefer to like parts, `fttnd in whichil ,n Figure l represents a perspective view. l 'f Figure 2,-an elevation of belt-tightener and shoe7V Figure 3, section of same.

tor.
I Y Figure 7, elevation of same.
Figure 8, plan of saine. i Figure 9, shoe? oftightener.
t 'I his'is an improvement in the manner of tighten`` machinery, bya simple device.
*'lhe bearings of plleys, for directing the belt, are `madel adjustable at requisite angles for this purpose.
Tile drawings illustrate Athe device as applied` to A- the front of the main frame `ofthe machine. B, the back-board oflplatformpunning parallel with Gis the draper-frame, carrying roller at its upper end ,with a pulleyon the ,axle of the same, L.
D is.the slotted arm, carrying the tightenerpul` ley E. This arm is adjustable at various heights, by means lof the slot g g, iig. 4, cut in the vertical face of the frame A, deep n enough merely io ,steady it; another 'slot, f j, running transversely of this slot, and deep enough to embed `the shoe7 ff, and form a slot in which it can be adjusted to the right or left, the face of the `shoeprojecting somewhat above the level of the vertical slot g g.
, The pulley E is attached, byahorizontal spindle, to the upper part of the slotted tightener Dl F is the shoe or adjuster ofthe tightener-arrn7 D, which forms the bed or bearing against which the tightener-arm isholtedand adjusted.
l Theboit z passesamugt the 1101@ it the frame behind, and'successively through the slot e, (in the f shoeF,) alud the slot a in the arm D.
The curved face of the s hoeprojects, as beforestated, 'above the level of the' slot g g, by which it will be seen Ythat any shifting ot' the shoe F, eitherto all . Figure, perspective view of auxiliary belt-direc-` the right or to the left, behind the arm D, will incline the latter, and the axis of tlie pulley E, more or less from a line joining the frame at a right angle, by which the belt is adjusted to run evenly on defective pulleys, at a distance, as at L, which have become displaced by wear oi'their axles, &c.,-or other vimpairment, causing the belt to run off the impaired pulley.
The bolt (l, at the same time, is used to readjust the pulley E, as a tightener on the belt K, by sliding the arm D under its nut, when loosened.
Tile pulley E is secured on the tightener-arm by a left-hand nut or bolt, o'r equivalent fastening, b, and washer. l
G is' a rectangular iron plate, with vertical slot, n, cut or cast in part of vits length, and an oblique slot,
'pullcysrod of pulley H, (as in Haines harvester.)
This plate is adjustable in a slot cut vertically in in by means'ofa bolt in the slot it.
A mortise or oblong horizont-al slot, k, lig. 7, ad-
which rod passes on through the slot l.
`l`\low, the slet k, in the frame allows of a horizontal motion of the end of the pulley-rod, so that a blow on the top of the plate-G forces the end of the rod to the right hand; coutrarily, a blow. on the under edge of the plate will cause the oblique slot Z to force the end of the rod in the opposite direction, thus causing to suit the belt.
this drawing, or example, will illustrate the use ofthe plate G, and its effect on said rod and pulley. The belt passes beneath the latter, under the draper-p'ulley L, around it, and back again beneath the pulley D, or tightener, and thence around the crank-pulley M, orbelt-driver. n
lVhat I claim asiny invention, isl. The combination of the .slotted shoe F, and
nutb, adj ustiugfbolt d, and slot g g, in frame A.
2. Adjustiug-plateG, with its vbolt-slot a, and pulley-rod slot l, inr combination withV the mortisek lr, pulley lH, audits rod o, all substantiallyas described, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that 'I claim the foregoing, I have CHARLES K. MYERS.
Witnesses; i i
WM. B. PARKER,
C. J'. ELLIOTT.
l, of similar size, through which passes the end of the 4 the back part of the frame A, and is adjustable theref mits the end of the pulley-rod through the frame A,
the pulley H, on the rod, to assume a different angle This pulley H being situated on the joint-rod, in
its bed f, with the slotted arm 1),' pulley E, left-handv f hereunto set luy hand, this v18th day of October, A.
