LAWRENCE A. BERTRAM, 0F PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR.OF-ONE-HALF TO HARRY NEWLANDS, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
Pen-men.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itlmown that I, LAWRENCE A. BER- '1'RAM,'1.- resident of Pittsburg, (North Side,) in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pen-lifters: and 1.do l1 ercby declare the following to be a, full; deer, and
exact description thereof.
i My invention relates to 1iftere,end hoe speeml refeience to ,whet ere generally known as pn-n lifters foi' being detaolmbly connected to pens or other similar sheped vessels.
The object of m invention is to provide a oheap, simple ant ellicient lifter which will be nble of beingreiulily and easily attec-her to the ei'tiele to be lifted, will be capeble of firmly taking a. seoure hold on such article and will also be enpoble of being quickly detached from the'orticle.
My invention consists, generally stated, in the novel arrangement, construction :ond combination of ports, as hereinafter more specifically set forth and :leserilmil, and paw tieulerly pointed out in the elmms.
To enable others skilled in the on; to which my invention u-ppertnins to conetrn ut end use my improved hit-er, I. will describe the some more hilly, referring to the neomnpnnyingz drawing, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of m improved lifter in Position and ready to be e. :nnpod-tn a pan. Pig. 2 is o similnr view showing the some clamped to the pain. Fig.3 is a pla n 'i'iCW of the lifter. Fig. -l is n plon'view of the looking member.
Like sy'l'nbde oi lfli'Gl'Oi'lLO heroin indicate like ports in each of the figures of the drawer As illustrated in the drmvmg, i .re nnsene the lifting;- 0|. handle member oi t It! liftin- Wlliull inn-i n. handle all one om? mid the two ju-wr-i 2- extending dmvmvu :1! from the other owl. lwlounteil upon the manner l is the tilting member -12, which is pivoted to the int-mom l by moons of u. rod 5 extending across and na'ulorsnnl momlmr l.
his ix-lthin hon-s fol-nun! in lugs Ii extending down from the under fo -v of the member 1 and in arms; 7 extending down from each side of the memllord and littilnyon each side of tho lugs U; 'lihe'inemhor 4 has a jaw 8 extending down from one end of the some sn-l in front of and between the two jaws 3 on the membor 1, and the opposite end of seicl'x'neniber 4 Patented Aug. 8, 1809.
has an enlargement 9 thereon, which is rounded from the under face of the said member, as at 10, to assist in the insertion of the looking member hereinafter desciibed under said member 4 when it is desired to; use
the device in clamping.
them-on, and connected to said memberis the U-shnped looking member 12, which is adapted to iit around said memberthr on 'h the openin 13 therein and formed by t 9 end 14 on arms 15 extending down from said end. The locking member 12 is hung such and is triangnlnnshaped in cross-sew tion and provided with a pointed portion 14 end flat portion 14" thereon. A flexible met-e1 strep l5 is bent around the arms 15 of the U-shope'cl member lit-for closing the lower end of said member in order to hold the member 12 on the member '1 and when said member 12 mm boremoved from tile said member 1.
lifter is in: lollows-Jlhe giants are normfllly disposed as shown in l'ul. lines Fig. 1, end when it iodosired to hit upon, pot, dish or other culinary article or vessel, the lifter in i such a position is placed over the u )psr edge [of the wall rt of the vessel A an thereby I allow will wall to come between the jo-e's 3 l and 8 on the members 1 and 4; with the jaws 3 on the outside of mid wall anti tho jaw-S on the inside of the so me. After this is done, the loohin member 12 is move-Ll or slid lorwnml on t m member 1 to e position under the llltlil lll' 4, as shown in dotted lines Fig. 1, which will not lo raise no om'l of said memher 4 over the member 1, owl-through said member 4 living pivoted to said niei'liil'mr 1 by the rod .3. the ow 3 at ll'm other end. of snitl inr-mlwr will he brought against the vessel wall it. in order to clamp the [jaws and S ngninslthe vessel well u, the loo zing member ll 9 can) then. he tilt-oil or no inn; [moi-2 by graspingzthe arms .15 on the sumo to the posit-ion show n in Fig. .2, which will cause the triangulur-olmpod and M to ho tanned so that it will not as a (mm by the flat portion14 on said and engaging with theunder face of the '1he npper face of the member 1 is provided with ii series of teeth or serrations '11 from the member 1 by its upper end 14 and The use and opt-lotion of my improved member 4 and the ointed portion 14 611- on the upper face of the member 1. With-11 0 snicl strep is dotn ohed l'rorn'the arms 15 they ill) the locking member 12 in this position the portion or end of the member 4 over the member 1 will be further slightly raised on its pivot rod 5 connecting said meml'iors and 4 together, and will thus throw back the jaw 8 on said member 4, so that the vessel wall a will be clamped tigihtly between said jaw and-the jaws 3 on he member 1 and enable the vessel A to be lifted and carried by the handle 2. The lifter can easily and quick] be released or removed from the yes sel we 1 a atany time by throwing or swmging forward the locking member 12 to a vertical position, which Wlll release the pointed portion 14" on the end 14 thereof from engaging with the teeth 11 and the Hat ortion from the member 4, so that sai member f1 will drop down and free its jaw 8 from binding on the wall a, after which the member 12 can be drawn back to the osition shown in full lines Fi 1 to 0 an up t e jaws 3 and 8 entire] and then t e lifter can be removed from t e said wall.
It will thus be seen that my im roved lifter will facilitate the handling of \OllOW articles, such as vessels which are not provided with ermanent handles, and will provide for a omestic utensil or tool of great utility ;for household use in lifting vessels from stoves, ran es, etc., which are not provided with hand es or where they are so provided and such handles have become too high'l heated. The device will enable a firm gri ping-and clamping action to be made wit the vessel, so that there will be no liability of the lifter and vessel becoming loose or. separated and allow the vessel to drop.
The liiter can be used in'handling a num'- ber of difierent kinds of articles or vessels and can be provided with L ion or or solid handle such as is shown at :2 in otted lines on Fig. 3, while various modifications and changes in the design and on motion of my improvedlgger, may be resorted'to without departin m the s irit of the invention or sacr cing any 0 its advantages.
what I claim as m invention, and desire to secureby Letters atent, is 1. A lifter oomprisinlgra handle member having jaws thereon, a t tin'g member pivoted to'said handle member and having a aw thereon, and a -swin ing lockin mem er hung from and aroun said hand e member and movable along said member for engaging with said members to raise the tilting member in the closing of said jaws.

A lifter comprising a handle member having jaws projectin thereon, a tilting i'nembcr pivoted to sai handle member am havinga 'aw thereon, and a swinging locking member rung from and around said. handle member and movable along said member, said locking member having a triangularsha Mid and for on aging between and with sai handle and til ing members to raise said tilting member in the closin of said jaws.
3. A lifter com rising aiandle member having serrations t ereO'Ii, jaws on said member, a tilting member pivoted to said handle member and having a jaw thereon, and a swinging locking member hung from and around said handle member arid movable along said member for engaging with said tilting member and said serrations to raise said tilting member in the closing of saidv BvWS- J 4. A liiter com rising a handle member having serrations t ereon, jaws on said memher, a tilting member pivoted to said handle member and having a 'aw .thereon, 'and a swinging locking mem er hungfrom and around said handle member and movable along said member, said locking m m r having a triangular-shaped end for engaging with said tilting memb r and said serrations to raise said tilting her in the closing of saidjaws.
5. A lifter co having serrations t ereon, jaws on said member, a tilting member pivoted to said handle member and having a jaw thereon, and a swinfiingmember hung from and around said han e member and movable alon'g the same, said lockin member having a t'ria ularshaped en the pointed end of which is adapted to engage with said serrations and.
