PETER F. WAGNER, OF GREENSBURG', INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONEJIALF TO JOHN W. WHITE, OF GREENSBURG, INDIANA.
ADJUSTABLE t DROP-LIG'HT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, Pnrnn F. lVAoNnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greensburg, in the county ot yDecatur and State oi Indiana, have invented a new and uset'ul Adjustable Dropflig-ht, et which the tollowing is a specification.
My invention relates to drop lights, and particularly to those which are adapted to be attached to a gas bracket or chandelier and be easily detachable therefrom. and which depend from said bracket, the obje :t of my invention being to provide a drop light of this character which is so construct'- ed that it will told up so 4as to lower the burner thereof to any desired distance below the permanent gas bracket, or that the drop light may be raised to such a position that the burner thereof is brought to a level with the burner of the permanent gas bracket.
The invention consists in the details of construction and arrangement ot' part-s de scribed in the accompanying specification and specifically stated in the appended claims.
n the drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my drop light as applied to a chan` delier, the parts being extended; Fig. i2 is a like view showing the drop light in its raised position; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section otl the pivotal connection between the gooseneck and one section otl the drop light; Fig. Lt is a. like longitudinal section ot the pivotal connection between the two sections ot' pipe; Fig. 5 is an end view ot the hub 17 and sleeve 15, the head being removed.
1n the drawings, 2 and 3 denote two lengths or sections of ordinary gas pipe. The section 3 is screw-threaded at its upper end into a nipple it, formingpart ot and projecting from a sleeve This sleeve surrounds and is relatively rotatable upon a hub 6, which is preferably conical and is provided at one end with the projecting nipple 7. The interior of the hub is formed with a passage 8 to which a passage 9 extending through the nipple 4 and through the side ot the hub connects. A passage passes through the nipple 7 and enters the longitudinal passage 8. The end of the hub is closed by a plug Ga, as common in constructions of this character, thus permitting the passage S to be bored. At its other eX- tremity the hub 6 is reduced and surrounded by a washer 11, which bears against the sleeve A tightening screw 12 is inserted Specification of Letters Patent.

in the small end ot the hub. its head bearing against the washer 11. By turning this screw the hub is drawn into the sleeve 5, and held tightly in place, thus increasing the rigidity otl the joint and tightening it so that no gas may escape. The lower end ot the pipe 3 is bent upward and provided with any t'orin of burner connection 13, and with the `usual shade, l-t, ot' any desired torni. rllie upper end otl the section Q ot pipe is also provided with a joint similar to the joint connecting the two sections. .frs will be seen in Fig. 3, the pipe 2 is screw threaded into a nipple it, projecting from a conical sleeve 15, which surrounds aconical hub 17. This hub is formed with a cent 'al bore, 1S, and with the passages 19 and 20, passing through the nipples.
Ait one end the hub is formed with the nipple Q1, .into which screws the connecting reducer QQ, screwed upon the lower end oi a goose-neck, Q3. The other end of the hub is provided with the tightening screw Q5, formed with an enlarged head Qrl. A washer26 surrounds the squared end 17n of the hub and a washer Q7 bears against the washer 26, and the head Q1. It will be. obvious that by turning this head in one direction, the hub will be drawn more firmly into the sleeve and that the joint will thus be tightened to any desired extent. This not only prevents any leakage ot gas through the joint, but also provides a means whereby the joint may be so tightened as to hold the sections 2 set at any angle desired around the hub and thus permit the drop light to be raised or lowered if desired. The other end of the goose-neck is provided with an enlarged head 28 adapt ed to tit over and be attached to the burner nipple of any ordinary gas fixture.
In Fig. 1 my drop light is shown as extended, while in Fig. 2, the two sections have been rotated upon the hub 17 to bring them into a position wherein the shade 14 is raised' to a point level with the ordinary permanent burner of the chandelier. In this position the drop light provides a burner `practically the same as the permanent burner of the gas fixture, while, at the same time, it. may be adjusted to any point in a vertical plane desired by loosening the screw head 2% and drawing the sections downward and again tightening the screw head.
Inaslnuch as the hub 6 and the sleeve 5 merely t'orm a pivotal connection between Ythe regular gas burner.
the two sections, 2 and 3, of the pipe, and merely require to he tightened to prevent leakage of gas, there is no necessity of providing a clamping or adjusting head to the screw, 12, but the pivotal connection between the pipe 2 and the goose-neck or other connection used for connecting the hub 17 to the regular gas burner, must be provided with means whereby the pipe 2 may be clamped in various positions so as to hold' the drop light at various heights or in the .position shown in Fig. 2. 1t is to this end I have provided the enlarged head 24e, and because of the fact that this head has to be loosened and tightened whenever the drop light is adjusted, am obliged to use the gasket which prevents any leakage of gas. While l have shown a goose-neck, 23, as connecting the hub 17 to the gas burner, do not wish to be limited to this, as any other connection may be used between the hub and The goose-neck, however, is best, as it permits the drop light to be applied over the ordinary lamp shade without having to remove the shade.`
My invention is simple, easily applied, quickly detached and may be very simply and cheaply made. lt may be applied to any form of burner and while I have shown what l believe to be the preferred construction I do not wish to be limited to the precise details displayed.
Having thus described my invention, what claim as new and` desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
l. A drop-light including a tubular hub having a screw threaded portion projecting from one side adapted to be connected to the burner of a permanent gas bracket, said hub being truste-conical, and a truste-conical sleeve surrounding and rotatable upon said hub having a nipple projecting therefrom connecting with the bore of the hub, a clamp screw projecting into the hub having an enlarged head and adapted to urge the sleeve into tight engagement with theY hub, a section of pipe attached to the nipple 'ot the sleeve, a section of pipe pivotally con-V nected to the first-named section for movement in a parallel plane, and a burner attached to the free end of the last-named section.
2. A drop-light including a relatively iixed attachment formed into' a goose-neck, and provided at one end with means for attachment to the burner of a permanent gas bracket a section of ine ivoted to said athaving a screw threaded reducer projecting from one side, a goose-neck attached to said reducer and at its other end provided with means forrengagement with the burner of a permanent gas fixture, a sleeve surrounding and rotatable upon the hub and having a nipple thereon connecting with the bore of the hub, a clamp screw projecting into the hub having an enlarged head and adapted toV urge the sleeve into tight engagement with the hub, a pipe section attached to the nipple of the sleeve, a tubular hub attached to the end of said pipe section, a sleeve rotatable upon said hub having a nipple connected to the interior of the hub, a pipe section attached to said nipple and depending therefrom and having at its end an upturned portion provided with a burner.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my'signature in the presence of two witnesses.
