Be it known that I, EVAN W. CORNELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Adrian, in the county of Lenawee and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gas-Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates particularly to downdraft incandescent gas lamps for use in connection with gas fixtures of various kinds, such as chandeliers and wall brackets.
My primary object is to provide a lamp of the character indicated possessing the characteristics of simplicity and cheapness of construction and operating in an improved manner.
The invention is illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a side elevational view of my improved lamp as applied to a chandelier-arm; Fig. 2, a broken sectional view taken in the plane of the paper in Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a broken elevational view taken as indicated at line 3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a broken view taken as indicated at line 4 of Fig. 1; Figs. 5, 6 & 7, sectional views of the burner tube taken as indicated at the corresponding line of Fig. 2; and Fig. 8, a view looking at the mouth of the burner-tube, as indicated at line 8 of Fig. 2.
In the construction illustrated, A represents a chandelier-arm and B, my improved gas lamp applied thereto. The lamp comprises a nipple I) applied to the chandelierarm and provided with a gas passage controlled by a needle valve 12 a burner-tube b adjustably connected with the member I); a globe-support b carried by the member 19 a globe 1) depending from said globe-support a mantle 6 depending from the tip of the burner-tube; and a smoke-guard or canopy I) supported on a stem b rising from the burner-tube b The nipple b has a base portion 5 with a threaded vertical bore screwed on to the upturned extremity of the chandelier-arm, and an inclined portion 1), at right angles to which the needle valve 6 is arranged. The nipple has an inclined passage 11 and a lateral orifice I) in alinement with and through which the gas is directed into the humertube. The burner-tube has an inclined portion I) which is in aXial alinement with the needle valve; and a downturned portion 6 supplied with a tip b of peculiar formation. The inclined portion 1) of the burner-tube is equipped exteriorly with a flange or guard 6 which preferably is of the rectangular form shown in Fig. 5, and which may be cast integrally with the burner-tube. On the upper side of the inclined portion b" of the burner-tube and below the guard 6 is a socket I) which receives the stem 6 The inclined portion 1) of the nipple b is equipped with lateral perforate lugs b which receive a guide-stud b and the stem of an adjusting screw 6 projecting from lateral lugs 6 with which the burner-tube is provided at its up per, or base, end. The head of the adjusting screw and a collar I) screwed on to the adjusting screw embrace the corresponding lug b" and provide against longitudinal thrust of the screw. The stud b is firmly secured in the corresponding lug I), and its lower end moves freely in a guide-perforation I) with which the corresponding lug 6 is provided. Depending from the base portion of the burner-tube is a slightly curved lug b which supports the globe-support b The globesupport is preferably formed of a strip of sheet metal bent into ring form, the extremities being connected with the lug b by screws 12 as shown in Fig. 3. One extremity is provided with a tenon b which fits in a mortise or socket with which the other eX- tremity is provided. I
The needle-valve b may be of any suitable construction. As shown, it has a threaded shank b which works in an internallythreaded perforate boss Z2 with which the nipple b is provided. The valve is provided at the base of its conical portion with a co1- lar b which is recessed as shown, and which works in the bore 17 serving as a guide for the extremity of the valve. The stem of the valve is equipped with a disk 12 equipped peripherally with thin teeth or projections, enabling the valve to be operated without discomfort from heat.
The burner-tube b is provided just below its angle 5 with opposed lateral lugs I) and with an additional lateral lug I), the latter having a socket 6 The lugs serve as a support for a mantle-ring I) of well-known construction. The socket Z1 serves to prevent accidental displacement of the mantle-ring.
The ti 5 of the burner-tube is externally flange as shown in Figs. 2 & 7, and the annular end surface of the same is provided with scallo s or recesses 12 as shown in Figs. 2 8c 8. T e interior surface of the burnertip is provided with three triangularly arranged fillets ac producing a constricted triangular bore,near the end of the tip, the reeesses 5 of the bore meeting the scallops 5 at the tip extremity. This formation of the burner-tip facilitates the spreading of the gas and insures a more complete incandescence of the mantle at its upper or base end. The scallops 6 are staggered with relation to the mantle-supporting lugs, so that drafts will be created avoiding the deposition of carbon on said lugs. The burner-ti is preferably supplied with a gauze cone 5 which is introduced from the base end of the burnertube and lodged adjacent to the bend or angle in the tube, the base of the cone engaging an internal annular recess of the burner-tube. The burner-tube is provided near its tip with flattened convergent external surfaces 6 which facilitate the adjustment of the mantle.
The operation of the lamp will be readily understood from the foregoing detailed descri tion. The burner-tube is adjusted bodily with relation to the nipple b by means of the screw 11 leaving a space b between the base end of the burner-tip and the nipple for the admission of air. Once the burnertip is adjusted for a given pressure of gas, there is no occasion for further adjustment. The needle valve 5 is useful for the purpose of keeping open the orifice b. As the gas is injected into the burner-tube the air is drawn in with it in the usual manner, and the mingled air and gas pass by a short route to the tip of the burner-tube where the ignition occurs. It will be observed that the formation of the burner-tube provides against the subj cation of the gas to any great heat before the tip of the burnr-tube is reached, thereby obviating objections to constructions of the goose-neck type now in common use. The guard 5 serves to prevent the fire from flashing back to the orifice b and it serves further to cause the products of combustion to follow the same general direction to the side of the globe which is opposite the chandelier-arm.
Practical operation of the device has shown that perfect combustion may be obtained thereby, and the heat employed in the most economical manner for producing in candescence of the mantle. The burnertube may be readily formed of cast-iron and is practically indestructible. The nipple b and the attendant parts, and the globe-support 5 which are exposed to View, may be of brass. It will be noted that there are no adjustable parts exposed to intense heat.
The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only, and no undue limitation is to be understood therefrom.
What I regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of a burner-tube having an inclined base portion and a depending tip portion, a globe support, a globe depending from said support and inclosing the tip portion and a part of the base portion of said burner-tube, and a transverse guard on said inclined base portion extending within the upper portion of said globe.
2. The combination of a nipple having an inclined gas outlet orifice, a burner-tube hav ing an inclined base portion mounted on said nipple in alinement with said orifice and having, also, a depending tip portion forming an obtuse angle with said base portion, a globe support carried by said base portion, a globe depending from said support, and a guard within the upper portion of the globe mounted on said base portion of the burner tube and inclined in a direction opposite the direction of inclination of the base portion of the burner tube. 3. The combination of a nipple adapted to be applied to a chandelier-arm and provided. with a lateral orifice, a valve connected with said nipple and controlling said lateral orifice, and abodily-movable burnertube adjustably supported on said nipple and having its base portion separated from the nipple by an air-admission space, said burnertube having a depending tip forming an angle with the body portion of the burner tube.
4. The combination of a nipple having a vertical threaded bore and an inclined portion provided with a lateral inclined gas orifice, and a bodily-movable burner-tube adjustably carried by said inclined portion and having an inclined base portion presented to said gas orifice and a depending burner-tip forming anobtuse angle with said inclined portion.
5. The combination of nipple having a base portion provided with a vertical bore and an inclined portion carried thereby having a gas passage provided with a lateral orifice, a burner-tube having an inclined base portion adjustably connected with the inclined portion of said nipple and equipped with a depending burner-tip, and an external inclined guard carried by the inclined portion of the burner-tube and extending transversely thereof.
6.
