Description

UNITED STATES I PATENT OFFICE.
f RICHARD GROOM, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR CLEANING PLOWS.
. Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 92,959, dated July 27, 1869.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RICHARD GRooM, of Albany, in the county of Albany and Statel of New York, have invented a new and Improved Plow-Gleaner; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in whic Figures l and 2 are side elevations of my i11- vention.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in both the figures.
The principal object of my invention is to provide an attachment for plows by which they may be readily cleaned during the process of plowing; also, to clear away from the colter any roots or stubble or vines that obstruct the passage of the share through the earth. This object I accomplish by the construction of a three-bladed share, and attaching the same to the front of a plow, as Will be hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawings, B designates one blade of the shares, which is set with its front or cutting edge, o, at an inclination backward about as much as is shown in Figs. l and 2. The share-blade B, which alsoacts as a colter, is rabbeted into the front edge of the landside G, so as to present an even surface with the landside, as shown in figures aocompanying this. The said blade or colter B is secured rmly to the landside G by means of bolts a a, and may be easily taken off to sharpen it whenever desirable.
C designates the second stationary blade of the shares, and this blade I place on theunder side of the beam F, and close to the blade or colter B, and on the same plane as the landside G and blade B, so that the movable blade A may work close up to the cutting-edge b of the said blades O and B. I construct a third or movable blade, A, in the form of a bent lever, as shown in Figs. l and 2. The lower end of this lever is made with two beveled and sharp edges, e and d, made in the usual and well-known manner for shares. The edges c and b of blades B and C are also beveled, similar to the edges e and d of movable blade A. lAt the upper end of the bent lever or movable blade A, I construct a strap or connecting-rod, D, which connects the arm d4 of E designates an operating-lever, the lower y end of which is constructed so as to move freely upon a stud or bolt fastened to the landside, as shown at f in Fig. l. The upper end of lever Eis bent backward, so as to be easily reachedrby the hand of the plowman. The horizontal blade C may be bolted to the under side of beam F, so that it may be taken off, to sharpen it, whenever necessary.
The three blades forming my device for cleaning plows and freeing the same from stubble, roots, or vines I construct of good steel, so that they may have good cuttingedges on them.
From the above description it will be seen that the mode of operation of my invention will be as follows: In going through clear ground, the lever E and share-blade A will belv placed in the position shown in Fig. 2; but as soon as any stubble, roots, vines, or similar' impediment obstructs the free and easy passage of the plow, the driver has only to push forward the lupper end of operating-lever E, which will bring down the middle share-blade, A, and cut off any obstructing substance; and when the lever E is brought back to its normal position (shown in Fig. 2) the cuttingedges e and b will operate upon any further obstructions that may be offered to the progress of the plow.
Having described my invention and its mode of operation, what I claim as new, and
desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The share-blade A, in combination with colter B, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. rIhe horizontal share blade C and the two-edged movable share-blade A, in combi- .nation with an upright blade or colter, B, substantially as herein shown and set forth. n
RICHARD GROOM.
