\ ANDREW J. COMPTON, OF TRENTON, NEW JERSEY.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ANDREW J. COMPTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Trenton, in the county of lt iiercer and Fatate of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Putty- Knives, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in putty knives and the primary object of the same is to provide a device of this character wherein a blade is secured to a handle, said blade carrying a sharp diverging point to cut the old putty clean from the wood.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction, efficient in practice and one which can be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
WVith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and the arrangement of parts which will hereinafter be more fully described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a modified form with the blade rigidly fixed in the handle. Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig.3 is a side elevation of my device with the blade closed in the handle.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 denotes the handle of my putty knife which is hollow and adapted to receive the blade 2 and secure the same in place by means of rivets 3, said blade having a Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 19, 1908.
Patented July 27, 1909.
Serial No. 439,400.
straight back edge 4: and a front tapering edge 5. At a point adjacent the end 6 of the blade the straight back edge diverges and forms a sharp point 7 used especially for cutting the old putty clean from the wood.
In Fig. 3 of the drawing I have shown a modified form of my invention wherein I use a blade having the diverging sharp point and is pivotally secured to a handle in order that the blade might be shut.
From the foregoing taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the ad vantages of the construction and method of operation will be readily understood to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the principal operation of the invention, together with the device which I now desire to have it understood, that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made as are within the scope of the invention.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is:
A putty knife comprising a handle, a blade l'iaving diverging side edges connected to a handle, said blade having a diverging point formed at the outer end on the back edge thereof for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ANDREV J. COMPTON.
Witnesses E. M. READING, M. F. MODADE.
