INVALIDS TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 20, 1909.
Application led September 22, 1968. Serial No. 454,182.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARY A. HAWLEY, a citizen oi the United States, residing at Elk Grove, in the county oi Sacramento and' State oi California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Invalids7 Tables, of which the following is a specification.
The table to which this invention relates, is primarily intended l'or use in the care of inva ids, and is arranged so that the table can either be used flat, as for serving meals thereon, or tipped up at any desired angle to serve as a reading` stand. Obviously it is capable oi' use for many other urposes.
In the drawings, Iigure 1 is a perspective view; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the table when raised. Figs. 4 and 5 are views of details.
The table is carried by two sup orts 1, 1, having somewhat extended flat ases, 2, 2. Mounted in these supports, are a air oi' sliding standards 3, which are he d in such grooves by plates 4. Each support has a perforated ear 5, serving as a journal i'orthe shaft 6, which has secured at each end a wheel or disk 7, this wheel 7 having on its inner 'face a spiral cam 8. The wheels may be rotated by grasping their edges or they may be provided with handles (not shown). Each standard 3,' has on its outer face, a series of lugs or teeth 10 so spaced as to be successively engaged by the spiral cam 8 as the wheel is rotated, thereby raising the table to the desired elevation. Each oi' the movable standards 3 has at its top a cross piece 9, to one end oi' which is pivoted a bar 12, to which the table top 2U is secured in any suitable manner. Pivoted to each barr 12, is a prop 13, having its other end pointed, for engagement with any one oi' a series of teeth 17 on the bar 9. Each prop 13 has also formed thereon, a hook 15, the rops 13 being secured together by crossar 16, the end of which is shown in Fig. 2. The end oi the bar 9 has its end 18, properly shaped to engage the hook 15.
As shown in Fig. 2,V the hooks, 15, are so located on the props 13 as to engage the ends 18 o1 the bars 9. when the table is lifted, as
by grasping its top, but will be disengaged when the table top is flat.
The mode oi operation of the device is apparent. rIhe table is raised by rotating the wheels 7, the cam 8 engaging successively the lugs or teeth 10. The spiral cam arrangement permits the table to be raised with a minimum amount oi eiiort, and with a peri'ectly easy and gradual movement. When the table is raised by taking hold of the top, the hooks will automatically slip under the ends of the cross-bars, but will be disengaged when the table is flat, thereby permitting the top to be raised and tilted at any desired angle by inserting the ends of the props in the teeth of the crossbar.
I claim.
1. A table having supports, standards sliding vertically therein, spaced projections or teeth on the standards, and spiral cams arranged in vertical planes and secured to. each end of a shaft mounted on the supports, said cams being arranged to engage with the teeth. y
A table having cross bars and means ior supporting them, a top pivoted to the cross bars, props having a pivoted connection to the top, said props having hooks arranged to engage over the ends oil the cross bars, the hooks being positioned to so engage the ends of the cross bars when the top is slightly raised, and to disengage when the top lies ilat on the cross bars.
3. A table having toothed cross bars and means for supporting them, a top pivoted to the cross bars, props having a pivoted connection to the top and means for engaging the teeth oi' the cross bars, said props having hooks arranged to engage over the ends oi the cross bars, the hooks being positioned to so engage the ends of the cross bars when the top is slightly raised, and to disengage When `the top lies fiat on the cross bars.
In testimony whereof, I aIiiX' my signature in presence of vtwo witnesses.
MARY A. IIAWILEY.
