JESSE W. GOMBS AND CHARLES W. COCHRAN, 01E WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS, ASSIGNORS, BY DIRECT AND MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO SUPERIOR AUTO JACK (10., 0F TURLEY,
OKLAHOMA.
JACK.
Application filed February 19, 1923. Serial No. 620,074.
To all whom 2'2. may concern Be it known that we, dress W. CoMBs and CHARLES W. CooHRAN, citizens of the United States, residing at Wichita Falls, in the county of Wichita and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Jack, of which the following is'a specification.
The invention relates to a jack for auto-- mobiles and the like in the combination of a quick acting jack that has many advantages.
Another object of the invention is to provide a jack that will operate at various heights with equal efficiency.
Another object of the invention is to provide a jack having an automatic release making it possible to operate the same with the foot instead of the hand.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this nature which is very simple and practical and can be manufactured and sold at a very nominal cost.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detail description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application. The invention residing in the construction, com bination and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the accompanying drawing the various parts will be referred to by number. And, whereas,
Figure 1 is a top view.
Figure 2 is a side plan view.
Figure 3 is a side sectional view.
The invention comprehends a jack having a base 1 with suitable braces for same, as shown in Figure 2. 2 is an adjustable stand ard arranged in the base 1, having a pin 3 arranged transversely thereof, said pm 3 be-- ing for association with the apertures 1 in the base 1. 5 is an operating lever attached to the standard 2, as illustrated at 6. 7 is a lifting lever attached to the standard 2, illustrated at 8. The lifting lever 7 having a slot arranged therein as illustrated at 9. 10 is a pin or roller attached to the operating lever 5 and extending through the slot 9 of the lifting lever 7. 11 is a ratchet lever attached to the lifting lever 7, as illustrated at 12. The standard 2 is arranged with a stop block therein, as illustrated at 13, for association with the teeth on the ratchet lever 11. 1 1 is a spring clip attached to the operating lever 5 for the purpose. of releasing the ratchet lever 11.
The device is operated in the following manner: The standard 2 is arranged in the base 1 in a position to release the pin 3 from the apertures l. The standard 2 is then raised or lowered to any desired height and the pin 3 then engages in the apertures 4. The operating lever 5 is then raised and the jack is then placed under the car, so that the car is resting on the jaws 15 of the lifting lever 7. The operating lever 5 is then pressed down and the teeth on the ratchet lever 11 engage with the stop block 13, at the position desired. To lower the jack the lever 5 is pressed to a position where the spring clip 14 engages with the operating lever 11. When the lever 5 israised, the ratchet lever 11 will raise therewith. When the lever 5 is raised to the position as illustrated in Figure 3, the pin 6 will re lease the ratchet lever 11 from the spring clip 14.
While it is believed from the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, we desire to have it understood that we do not limit ourselves to what is herein shown and described, and that such changes may be resorted to, when desired, as fall within the scope of What is herein claimed.
What we claim is:
1. A jack of the character described, the combination of an adjustable pedestal, a lifting member pivoted intermediate its ends to the top of said pedestal, said lifting member having a longitudinal aperture in one end thereof, a handle pivoted to said pedestal below said lifting member, having a transversely disposed member in association with the longitudinal aperture of said lifting member, a locking member having a plurality of notched teeth thereon pivoted to said lifting member, a member disposed in said pedestal for association with the teeth on said'locking member and means for auto-- matically releasing said locking member.
2. In combination, an adjustable pedestal, a lifting member pivoted at the top thereof, said lifting member having a hook on one end thereof forming a part thereof and a longitudinal slot in the opposite end there of, a handle pivoted to said pedestal havall ing a transversely disposed member in asspring clip disposed on said handle so as to sociation with the longitndinal slot in said engage said locking member.
