Specification of LettersPatent.
Patented Apr. 11, 1916.
Application filed January 18, 1915. Serial No. 2,922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHRISTOPHER A. Lneon'r'r, JEssE W. CHAPMAN, and'MARIoN J. WINSLOW, citizens of the United States, residing at Emmett, in the county of Canyon, State ofIda-ho, have invented a new and useful Folding Wagon-Jack, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in folding vehicle jacks, one object of the invention, being the provision of a jack of this character, which can be folded to occupy a small space and to be readily carried within the body of a vehicle or automobile, and which is provided with a sliding fulcrum member to which the operating lever is attached in combination with means for assisting in the sliding of the fulcrum member by the manipulation of the lever handle.
A further object of the present invention, is the provision of a jack of this character in which the operating lever is fulcrumed' upon a slidable member, which in turn is mounted upon a vertical support to which the same will be frictionally operating to lift an object, there being further provided means carried by the lever and by the standards whereby upon eleva- 2= ting the operating end or handle of the lever, the fulcrum is slid upon the support the desired adjustment.
to occupy ct of the invention, is
A still further 0b the provision of a jack of this character inexpensive and durable in construction, and thoroughly efficient and practical in use.
With the foregoing and other objects in proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it beingunderstood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention. Figure 1 is a perspective In the drawings, view of the complete jack in the position it assumes when in use. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the fulcrum members thereof of the same upon their carrying standards. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of' the complete jack collapsed or folded.
' upon-'Whichthe This operating lever 9' is provided with a the axle or wheel as the p the opposite end is provided with the hand held when the lever is the description Referring tothe drawings, the numeral 1 des1gnates the base, which ispreferably a fiat plate provided with a kerf or slot 1 therein, the purpose of which will appear hereinafter. V
Upstanding from the base 1 are the two main supporting plates or standards 2, whose oppositely extended feet 3 are attached to the base 1 while the upper ends are separated by the separating block t and secured together by means of the fastening V means or rivet 5. Adapted to fit upon the respective standards 2 and be slid longitudinally thereupon to effect the adjustment thereof relatively to the standards 2 are the binding members or loops 6, each one of which is provided with a fulcrum arm 7 L These arms project to thesame side of the standards 2 and have the fulcrum pin 8 engaged therethrough operating lever 9 is pivoted.
hooked end 10 which is adapted to engage gripping portionor handle 11. The-lever 9 is. disposed between and adjacent the respective sides of the arms 7, and said lever case may be, while i standards or supports 2 so that the fulcrum members 6 will be held rigidly thereupon.
In order to provide a means whereby the fulcrum members 6 may be slid upon the standards 2 as the handle 11 is elevated, one edge of each standard 2 is provided with a series of recesses or notches 12 while swingingly attached at 13 to the lever are the two plates 14 forming an arm. Said plates are separated by the block 15, and their free ends pro ect between the standards 2 be- I low the lever and have outturned fingers or lugs 16 adapted to be engaged with alined notches 12 so that the raising of the handle 11 will cause the fingers 16 to engage the respective notches 12 and thus consequently cause the fulcrum members 6 to be moved downwardly upon the standards 2' to thus adjust the iulc-rums to the desired downwardly. When the handle is operated in the opposite direction, the fingers 16 are moved out of engagement with the notches l2 and therefore do not interfere with the operation of the device as a jack.
As clearly shown in Fig 3, the lever 9 when the fulcrum members 6 are slid upwardly upon the members 2 and the arm composed of plates 14: is moved toward the upper end of the standards2, may have the handle 11 projected through the slot 1 of the base 1, so that the device is collapsed, with the lever in close to the standards or supports 2, thus permitting the present device to be placed in a small space, and producing a desirable jack for use in connection with motor cars.
Vhat is claimed is: p
1. Ajack including a standard, a gripping member movable vertically thereon and having a laterally projecting arm, a lever disposed 1n a plane parallel with said arm and'fulcrumed betweenits ends to said arm ad acent the free end and one side I thereof, that arm of the lever which projects in the same direction as the aforesaid arm forming an object supporting memher, the other arm of the'lever projecting in the opposite direction, and an arm piv- 'oted to the last mentioned arm of the lever and engageable with the standard below the lever, whereby when the second mentioned arm of the lever is .moved in one direction the gripping member will be moved upon the standard.
2. A jack including a standard, having a series of notches, a gripping member slidable upon the standard and having a laterally projecting arm, a lever disposed in a plane parallel with said arm and pivoted between its ends to said arm adjacent the thereof, one arm of in the same direct-ion as the aforesaid arm and forming an object supporting means, the other arm of the lever projecting in the opposite direction,
free end and one side said lever pro ecting Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by
and an arm pivoted to the second mentioned'arm of the lever and having a portion at its free end. engageable with said notches below the lever, whereby when the second mentioned arm of the lever is swung in one direction, the gripping member will be moved upon the standard.
8.A jack, including a base, a pair of standards carried thereby, a pair of gripping members slidable upon the standards and having arms projecting therefrom, a lever disposed between and fulcrumed to said arms, and cooperating means carried by the standards and lever whereby when the lever is swung inone direction, the grip ping members are moved in one direction upon the standards.-
4-. A jack, including a base, a pair of standards carried thereby, a pair of grip ping members slidable upon the standards and having arms projecting therefrom, a lever disposed between and fulcrumed between its ends to said arms, and an arm pivoted to the lever and having a portion at its free end'engageable with the standards whereby when the lever is swung in one direction, the gripping members are moved in one direction upon the standards.
7 5. A jack, including a base, a pair of standards carried thereby, a pair of grip ping members slidable upon the standards and havingarms projecting therefrom, a leverdisposed between and fulcrumed between its' ends to said arms, and an arm pivoted to the lever and projecting between said standards elow the lever, the arm having outturned fingers, and each standard having a'series of notches, said fingers being engageable in said notches.-
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own, we have hereto affixed our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
