, PATENT OFFICE.
JESSE H. KINGSBURY, OF LAPEER, M1CHIGAN.
LIFTING-JACK AN D THlLL-SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 749,489, dated January 12, 1904.
Application filed May 27, 1903.
To all whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, J ESSE H. KINGSBURY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lapeer, in the county of Lapeer and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Shaft-Support, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined lift ing-jack and thill-support, and has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient device of this character capable of performing the dual functions of a lifting-jack and a support for holding the thills of a Wagon or other vehicle in an elevated position when not in use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a combined device of this character which when used in the capacity of a lifting-jack is capable of a wide range of lifting adjustment, which may be quickly converted into a thillsupport, and which may be compactly folded.
for transportation or shipment.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a vehicleaxle, illustrating the application of my, device as a lifting-jack. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the jack, showing the same used as a thill-support. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device folded.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates the combined jack and thillsupport, which may be formed of wood or other suitable material and consists of a pair of spaced parallel uprights or bars 2, carrying a pivot-bolt 3, on which is hung a lever 4, the long arm having a series of vertically-disposed recesses or sockets 5. Pivoted between Serial No. 159,015- (No model.)
the upper ends of the uprights 2 in any suitable manner, as by a bolt 6, is an arm 7 the free end of which is inclined or beveled, as shown at 8, and provided with a pin or lug 9, adapted to engage any one of the series of recesses 5 in the bar 4 and by means of which the short arm of said lever is held at the desired height when the device is used as a lifting-jack.
The construction of the device will be readily understood, and the operation thereof is as follows: When used as a lifting-jack, the parallel arms are arranged in a vertical position,
.with the free ends thereof resting on the ground or other support and the short arm of the lever 4 placed under the axle or other ob ject to be raised. The longer arm of the lever is then depressed to raise the axle and the pivoted arm 7 swung downwardly until the pin or lug 9 catches in one of the recesses or sockets 5, according to the height at which it is desired to hold the object.
When it is desired to use the device as a thill-support, the lever 41S swung downwardly on its pivot until it rests between the parallel uprights 2 and the device placed beneath the carriage or vehicle, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The pivoted arm? is then swung upwardly into engagement with the cross-bar of the thills, firmly supporting the shafts in an elevated position.
The device may be compactly folded for shipment by swinging the lever downwardly between the parallel arms and allowing the arm 7 to rest on top thereof.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a device which is simple in construction and effective in operation, which may be easily transported from place to place, and which is capable of use either as a lifting-jack or as a support for holding the thills in an elevated position.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A device of the class described, comprising a pair of parallel spaced uprights of equal length, a lever pivoted at an intermediate point between the uprights, a downwardly-swinging or lug adapted to engage the recesses in the long arm of the lever, the lever being foldable between the uprights when the arm is used as a thill-support. 1
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto atfixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JESSE H. KINGSBURY.
