ROAD-GRADER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WINrInLo S. L1vnN soon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county ofJackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road Graders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in road graders; and pertains more particularly to means for adjusting the scraper-blade of the grader laterally to the line of advancement, my object being to obtain greater lateral adjustment than has been had heretofore so that the advantage of a long blade may be had with one of ordinary length.
When grading roads it is frequently desirable to adjust the blade considerably to one side of the machine, especially when working beside a ditch, and as lateral adjustment of the blade has heretofore been limited long blades have often been used to get the necessary reach. The objections to employing a long blade are that it requires a greater number of draft animals to pull the machine and greater stress is imposed upon the latter on account of the added resistance offered to the long blade. I attain the desired reach and overcome the objections by simple means as will hereinafter appear, and in order that the invention may be fully understood, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings, in which:

Fig. t is a broken rear elevation of the scraperblade showing the improved manner in which it is mounted. Fig. 5 is a cross section on line VV of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a sleeve forming part of the invention.

scraper-blade may be adjusted to the positions shown by full and dotted lines, Fig. 2, or given any desired inclination. When the blade occupies either of these positions 1nembers 5 are locked from accidental movement by split resilient sleeves 7, which snugly embrace members 5 and abut against the ears and the terminals of the yoke-shaped bar 6.
One pair of ears is preferably arranged nearer to their respective end of the scraperblade than the other pair so that the blade may be adjusted considerably to one side of the machine as shown by dotted lines, Fig. 2. Scraper-blade 3 is adjusted to any desired inclination by a pair of arms 8 having holes 9 for the reception of two pins 10 adapted to extend through any of said holes and the depending portions of the yoke-shaped bar.
Arms 8 loosely embrace a pair of rods 11 to permit longitudinal adjustment of the scraper-blade, to the upper portion of which said rods are secured. Yoke G is secured at its upper portion to a turntable 12 pivotally mounted upon a bolt 13 so that the scraperblade may be adjusted at any desired angle to the line of draft. Bolt 13 is carried by a brace 14;, secured to a pair of draft-bars 15, pivotally secured at their forward ends to a king-bolt 17, and united at their rear ends by a transverse bar 18. Turn-table 12 is provided with holes 19, any one of which is adapted to receive a pin extending through brace it for the purpose of locking the turn-table in any of its adjusted positions.

The scraper-blade is raised or lowered by mechanism consisting of a pair of depending links 21, the lower ends of which loosely engage the transverse bar 18, a pair of crankshafts 22, the cranks of which are loosely engaged by the upper ends of links 21, wormwheels 23 fixed to shafts 22, worms 2 1 intermeshing with the worm-wheels, a transverse shaft 25 upon which the worms are fixed, and a pair of handwhcels 26 fixed upon shaft 25 for operating the same. Shafts 22 and 25 are mounted in bearings 27.
The scraper-blade is swung laterally to the line of draft by a link 28 loosely secured at its lower end to transverse bar 18, a crank shaft 29 to the crank of which the upper end of link 28 loosely secured, a worm-wheel 30 fixed upon the upper end of shaft 29, a worm 31 intermeshing with worm-wheel 30, a shaft 32 upon which the worm-wheel is fixed, and a hand-wheel 33 fixed to the rear end of shaft 32 Shaft 29 is journaled in frame 1, and shaft 32 is journaled in bearings 34.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a grading machine, the combination of a scraper-blade, and longitudinal members carrying the same, said longitudinal members being slidably mounted upon the grader, substantially as described.
2. In a grading machine, the combination of a scraper-blade, longitudinal members carrying the same, said members being slidably mounted upon the grader, and means for locking said members after they have been adjusted to the desired position.
3. In a grading machine, the combination of a scraper-blade, ears secured thereto, longitudinal members secured to said ears, a yoke-shaped bar in which the longitudinal members are slidingly arranged, and resilient sleeves adapted to embrace the longitudinal men'ibers and abut against the ears and the yoke-shaped bar, for the purpose described.
4. I11 a grading machine, the combination of a scraper-blade, longitudinal members carrying the same, said longitudinal members being slidably mounted upon the grader, and means for swinging the scraper-blade laterally to the line of advancement.

6. In a grading machine, the combination of a scraper-blade, longitudinal members car rying the same, said longitudinal members being slidably and pivotally mounted upon the grader, and means for changing the inclination of the scraper-blade.
7. In a grading machine, the combination of a scraper-blade, longitudinal members carrying the same, said longitudinal members being slidably mounted upon the grader, and means for adjusting the scraper-blade at'any desired angle to the line of advancement.
S. In a grading machine, the combination of a scraper-blade, longitudinal members carrying the same, said longitudinal members being slidably and pivotally mounted upon the grader, rods extending longitudinally of the scraper-blade and secured to the upper portion thereof, arms to which said rods are pivotally and slidably secured, said arms having holes, and pins carried by the grader for engaging any of said holes.
