To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, OTTO LAUBER and HnINRIoH KANoNENBERe, residing at Essenon-the-Ruhr, Germany, both subjects of the Emperor of Germany, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Protecting-Shields for Guns, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to protecting shields for guns and the object of the invention is to provide the shield with a blind which is adapted to cover the sight opening of the shield and which affords a particularly effective protection against the enemys iire. In accordance with the present invention, this object is attained by the fact that the blind, which is hinged to the protecting shield, is provided with side walls for the sight-opening, which side walls, when the blind is open, form a lateral protection for the sight-opening.

One embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, by way of example.

A indicates the gun barrel which in the known manner is mounted to slide on the slide-track carrier B. The carrier B, on which is arranged the sight device O of the gun, is swingingly mounted in the mount D through the medium o1 the horizontal trunnions N. The protecting shield E is in the known manner secured to the mount D and is provided with an opening e (Figs. 3 and 4) for the sighting line of the sight-device O. The blind, which is adapted to cover the sight opening e and which consists of a flap G and two side walls G extending toward the rear side of the protecting shield, is jointed to the protecting shield above the sight opening 6 through the medium of two hinges F. The side walls G which have substantially the shape of sectors having their center coinciding with the axis of rotation of the blind G G are arranged in such a manner that they can pass through the sight opening 6 and contact with the side walls of the sight opening when the side walls G are located within the sight opening. The side walls G extend so far toward the rear side of the shield that they are still located partly behind the shield when the blind is in its uppermost position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The dimensions of the sight opening e are selected in such a manner that the sighting line passes through the sight opening and between the side walls Or in all the positions which the sighting line can assume during the sighting.

In Fig. 1, the sighting line is, by way of example, indicated in two positions designated x at and x m The sighting line assumes the position designated at at when the sighting line is parallel to the axis of the bore of the gun barrel and the latter lies horizontal. at x indicates the position which the sighting line assumes when the gun is directed against a target located in the muzzle horizon at the border of the firing field. One of the side walls G is provided with a plurality of notches g for a bolt 6 which is under the action of a helical spring 6 (Fig. 4). The bolt 6 is guided in a bearing 6 secured on the protecting shield E. The bolt 6 is provided with a handle a by means of which the bolt can be withdrawn from the notches g against the action of the spring 0 When the gun is directed, the blind G G is only opened to the extent required by the appertaining elevation of the sighting line. If, for instance, the sighting line assumes the position indicated by x x the operator, while holding the bolt 6 in its ineffective position by means of the handle e adjusts the blind in such a manner that the flap G is located only a short distance above the line 00 a and that one of the notches g is located in line with the bolt 6 as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. Thereupon the bolt 6 is released and the spring 6 causes the bolt to snap into the registering notch g to secure the blind in the above-mentioned position.

It will be seen from the drawing that, in this position of the blind G G the sight opening of the protecting shield is protected against projectiles falling at an inclination from above, the part of the sight opening which is located above the sighting line being also protected against projectiles which enter approximately horizontally, while the side walls G of the blind protect the sight sight opening, and a blind swingingly con nected to the shield and adapted to cover the sight opening when in its closed position;

said blind having side Walls adapted to protect the sight opening against lateral fire when the blind is open.

A protecting shield for guns having a sight opening, a blind for the sight opening swingingly connected to the shield and having side Walls adapted to protect the sight opening against lateral fire when the blind is open, and means for securing the blind in a plurality of positions relatively to the shield.
