CHALK-LINE HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 28, 1908.
Patented July 13, 1909.
Serial N0. 469,597.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, J AMES G. HALL, citizen of the United States, residing at OFallon, in the county of St. Clair and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chalk-Line Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to chalk line holders, and has for its object to provide a device of this kind so constructed that one or a plurality of chalk lines can be quickly and easily attached thereto or removed therefrom, and also one which when secured in an operative position will hold the lines taut to permit their manipulation in transferring a working line to the work under operation.
A further object of the invention is to provide a simple, constructively cheap and ellicient running line holder which may be used upon all character of construction work, and which may be securely held in any desired osition to properly retain the ends of the line without the use of nails or other attaching means.
The invention comprises essentially, a body portion provided with a handle at one end and having its opposite end extended longitudinally from the handle and provided with a series of longitudinally disposed grooves terminating in openings, and a transversely thickened portion intermediate said extended end and handle, the shoulder formed thereby being adj acently located to the openings.
For a full understanding of the invention, and the merits thereof and to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of two holders occupying an operative position upon the work; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the line holder partly in section; and Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view thereof.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 designates the body portion of the holder constructed of any suitable material and of substantially flat formation, and 2 designates a handle portion formed at one extremity. The opposite extremity 3 is longitudinally extended from the handle 2 and is provided With a series of longitudinally disposed line receiving grooves 4, the inner ends of which terminate in openings 5 of any desired formation in cross section.
As illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings the line 6 is placed in the receiving groove 4 and the end passed through the opening 5 where it is secured as by a peg or pin 7 corresponding in shape to said opening and constituting a wedge.
The body portion 1 intermediate the handle 2 and extended portion 3 is transversely thickened as indicated at S and extends beyond the grooved surface adjacent the openings 5 to form a shoulder 9. This thickened portion as illustrated may be integrally a part of the body portion or if desired may consist of an independent block (not shown) secured to said body portion adjacent the openings 5 and in such position that the shoulder 9 formed thereby will extend over the side edge of the work so that the grooved face of the extended portion 3 will rest flat thereupon as shown in Fig. 1.
In the practical operation of the holder one or more lines 6 may be employed and in certain character of work especially where a plurality of lines could be advantageously used the holder could be made in varying sizes and in which the grooves l would be properly spaced to meet the requirements of the particular class of work under construction. When placing the holder in position upon the work the ends of the lines (5 are first passed through the openings 5 of one holder and secured by the pins 7. That portion of the lines adjacent the ends is placed within the grooves 4 and the surface of the extended portion 3 in which said grooves are formed is placed llat upon the surface of the work so that the shoulder 9 engages the side edges thereof. The opposite end or portion of the lines 6 to be secured at the side of the work is then drawn taut through the openings 5 and when secured, the holder is placed in the proper position to hold the lines at the proper working distance or to be snapped in transferring a chalk line to a surface, as is commonly practiced in certain character of work.
From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawings it will be apparent that I have provided an efficient line holder which is easily and quickly placed in an operative position, and one by which a plurality of lines may be held, thus effecting the saving of time and labor in its manipulation.
Having thus described the invention What is claimed as new is:
1. A chalk line holder comprising a body portion having an inner grooved face, the inner face of the body portion being also provided With a projection extending from the body portion at right angles thereto, said body portion being provided With a passage for the chalk line extending from the exterior face of the body portion inward to said groove.
2. A chalk line holder comprising a body portion provided with a flat inner surface and having thereon a series of longitudinal grooves, the body portion being provided With a series of transverse passages leading from the exterior thereof to the interior face thereof and into said grooves, the inner face of the body portion having a projection at right angles thereto.
3. A chalk line holder comprising a handle, a body portion attached to the handle a projecting portion extending at right angles to the inner face of the body portion at its junction With the handle, the inner face of the body portion being provided With a series of longitudinally extending grooves adapted to receive chalk lines and the body portion be ing provided with a series of transverse passages extending from the exterior face to the interior face of the body portion and intersecting said grooves.
i. A chalk line holder comprising a body portion provided with a handle at one end and with a projection on its inner face extending at a right angle to the inner face, the inner face of the body portion being provided With a series of grooves designed to receive a plurality of chalk lines, said body portion having a series of transverse passages extends ing from the exterior face, to the interior face and intersecting said grooves, and a series of pins adapted to be forced into said passages and secure the chalk lines therein.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of tWo Witnesses.
. AMES G. HALL.
