h I I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. I
WALTER SCOTT WILLIAMS, OF CLINTON, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOI-t OF TWENTY-EIGHT ONE-HUN- DREDTHS TO 'CHARLES W. PIFER, TWENTY-EIGHT ONE-HUNDRICDTIIS TO CHARLES R. WESCOTT, AND FIFTEEN ONE-I'IUNDItEDTIIS TO WILLIAM I'I. Il. IIASTINGS, OF CLINTON,
ILLINOIS.
GRAIN-DOOR FOR CARS.
To all whom it may Concern:
Be it known that I, mrnn Sco'r'r Wn.- Luns, a citizen ot the United States, residing at Clinton, in the county of Dewitt and State ot' Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in (trani-Doors for Cars, of which the following is'a specitication.
My invention relates to the improvement of grain doors t'or cars and the objects of my invention are to provide an improved construction ot doors adapted for use in connection with cars carrying grain or other commodities; to so construct my improved doors as to admit of their being readily opened when they are subjected to the pressure ot' grain within the car; to provide improved ineans for locking the doors and for preventing the escape of grain beneath or about the same; to. provide in conjunction therewith improved means for closing the upper portion of the car doorway and to so construct metallic or wooden doors for grain cars as to permit ot their being easily and ireadily handled. These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure l is a face view ot a car body showing my improved doors therein in a closed position, Fig. 2 is an enlarged'section on line -m of Fig. I, Fig. 3 is an enlarged section on line y-y of Fig. l, Fig. I is an enlarged transverse section 011 line z-z ot' F ig.4 l, Fig. 5 an enlarged detail view in elevation illust ating the manner of hinging the inner door seetions,'and, Fig. G is a View of the base ot' one of said hinges taken at right angles with that shown in Fig. 4..
Similar ntnneralsrefer to similar parts throughout the several Views.
l represents a car body and 2 one of the doorways thereof. v
3 represents a fixed door sill plate which is secured to the Hoor of a car and extends between the sides of the doorway in the inner portion thereof. To the outer edge of the plate 3 is hinged a second sill plate member 4, the latter when extended outward*7 lying in a recess 5 of the door ,entrance and terminating in a downturned flange 6 which engages an outer and second recess 7 which is formed in the outer face and upper portion of the wood sill of the doorway. It will thus be observedthat the plates 2 and I form a Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 25, 1908.

complete'metal covering 'for the sill or entrance to the door.
IVithin the Icar and at each side of the doorway, I provide a fixed Vertical hinge rod S each ot the latter having formed on its lower end an enlarged collar or boss E), the nppcrside o' which is provided in its'rear portion with a notch or recess 10. Mounted to swing upon each ot the rods S is a vertically disposed metallic door section 11 which is preferably ot metal and to the outer vertical edges ot these door sections are hinged as indicated at'. l2, outer door sectionsI I3. llach of the sections Il has its inner vertical edge portion shaped to form a substantially tube-like hinge sleeve 1I through which the hinge rod 8 passes loosely. The lower end of each o these hinge `sleeves is inclined as indicated at let in Fig. 5, this inclined lower end being adapted to ride upon the upper side of the corresponding boss collar i). ()ne of the door sections It has its outer edge portion provided with au outwardly project-ing eX- tension or lip l'l which when the door sections are extended, overlaps the outer edge of the opposite section 13.
Iivoted to the outer side and lower portion o'tl each ot' the door sections lil is one end ol' a depending latch plate l5, the lower end ot the latter normally extending below the lower end ot the door section with which itI is connected and adapted to engage the outer side ol the vertical extension t5 of the sill plate member -lwhen the latter is turned upward and inward against the door sections, as shown in Figs. I and 8 of the drawing. (lne otE the door sections I3 has pivotally connected therewith one end of a latch bar 1G, said latch bar being adapted to be swung to the horizontal position shown in Fig. l of the drawing and to have its otherwise tree end engage a Suitable catch projection 1T on the outer face of the remaining door section 13.
As indicated in the drawing, the doox`- sections 11 and 13 have their upper terminations at points below the top of the doorway or'franie and in order that the space above said door sections may be closed if desired, I provide an upper door horizontal section 1S which has its upper edge portion suitably hinged on the inner side ot' the car above the doorway and which as indicated in Fig. 4
of the drawing, hns its end portions provided with transverse rounded extensions which ni :idnpted to-ene'nge or einhrziee the upper portions ot' the rods when snid door is in the lowered position shown iii toll linesI in Figs. l :1nd 5). (in. its outer i'ziee the door Section 18 is provided with n dependingr pii'oted hitoh plate lf), the lower end otf whieh is :idnpted to depend in front of :1nd engnge the upper endsI ot' the door sections ill.
