GEORGE F. MILLER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN OAN COMPANY,
OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
SPRING-Tor POWDER-Box.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application led October 26, 1908. Serial No. 459,474.
Patented July 13, 1909.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it l,nown that I, GEORGE F. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spring-Top Powder- Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in tooth ponder boxes or receptacles.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part ot this specification, Figure 1 is a side clevatior` of a spring top tooth powder box or receptacle embodyingmy invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section on line 2--2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail partial elevatioii and Fig. 5 is a detail partial sectional v ew showinga modification.
In thc drawing, 1 represents a tooth powder box or other receptacle having-a top 2, furnished with a neck 3, either integral with the top or in a separate piece and secured thereto as may be preferred. The neck 3 has an open upper end 4 andan aperture 5, preferably located at its lower part, and a longitudinal extending guide or groove 6.
i The 4closure sleeve or cap 7 fits inside the neck of the topv and has a closed upper end 8 and an annular shoulder or' enlargement 9 adapted to engage the open u per end of the neck 3 to iimit the downward) sliding movement ot the cap or closure sleeve., The cap or closure sleeve is also provided with an opening 10, adapted to register with the opening 5 in the neck 3 when the cap or The cap oi'l closure sleeve is depressed. closure sleeve 7 is provided With a guide or projection 11, adapted to tit in the guide or groove 6 in the neck 3 to prevent the cap or closure sleeve from turning. The cap or closure sleeve 7 is provided at its lower end with a tiange or shoulder 12 to limit its upwai il or outward sliding movement.
To automatically close the cap or closure sleeve 7 and hold it in its outermost position, the coiled spring 13 is inserted in the hollow cap or closure sleeve 7 and bears at its upper end against the closed upperend 8 of the sleeve 7, and this spring 13 is provided at its lowei^ end with an extension 14, having a loop or bent arm 15 which is soldered or otherwise secured to the top 2 at 16, the extension 14 and bent arm 15 of the spring fitting astride the lower end of the cap sleeve 7 when said sleeve is depressed so as'not to interfere with the sliding movement of the sleeve in opening and closing.
In the modification illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5, the guide groove engaging the guide device or projection 11 is made inclined or spiral instead of straight or longitudinal.
The spring 13 inside the cap oi' closure sleeve 7 is an open spiral one and serves by its expansion and contraction as a stiri'er to etlectually prevent clogging of the sleeve or of its side dispensing aperture, as well as to restore said cap or closui'e sleeve to its closed position.
I claim 1. The combination with a tooth powder or other receptacle top having a neck open' at its upper end, and provided with a dispensing aperture in its side, of a slidin cap or closure sleeve fitting inside said nec and closed at its outer end and open at its inner end, and provided with a dispensing aperture in its side adapted to register with the dispensing aperture of the neck when the cap or closure sleeve is depressed, and an open spiral spring inside said ca or closure sleeve to restore it to closed position and prevent clogging and bearing at its outer end against the closed outer end of Said sleeve, said spring-extending through the open inner end of said cap and being attached at its inner end to said top, substantially as speciied.
2. The combination with a tooth powder or pther receptacle top having a neck open atits upper end, and provided with a dispensing aperture in its side, of a sliding cap or closure sleeve fitting inside said neck and closed at its outer en'd and open-at its inner end, and rovidcd with a dispensing aperture in its side adapted to register with the dispensing aperture of the neck when the cap or closure sleeve is depressed, and an open spiral spring inside said ca or closure sleeve to restcreit to closed position and prevent clogging and bearing at its outer end against the closed outer end of said sleeve, said spiing extending through the open inner end of said cap and being attached at its inner end to said top, said cap or closure sleeve having a sto flange or shoulder at its lower end to limit the outward movement thereof, substantially as specified.
-- 3. The combination with a tooth powder ioo or other receptacle top having a neck o en at its upper end, and provided With a pensing' aperture in its side, of a sliding cap or closure sleeve fitting inside said neck and -closed at its outer end and o en at its inner end, 'and rovided with a ispensing aperture in its side adapted to register with the dispensing aperture of the neck when the cap or closure sleeve is -depressed,and an open spiral spring inside said ca or closure sleeve to restore it to closed position and prevent clogging and bearing at its outer end against the closed outer end of said sleeve, said spring extending through f the open inner end of' said cap and being attached at its inner end to said .topi said cap` or closure sleeve having a stop flange or shoulder at its loweiI end to limit the outward movement thereof, and said cap or closure sleevehaving at its outer end aA shoulder .to limit the inward movement thereof by engagement with the open outer end of said neck, substantially as specified.
4. The combination with a tooth powder or other receptacletop having a 'neck open at its upper end, and provided with a dis- A pensing aperture in' its side, of a sliding cap or closure sleeve fitting inside said neck and closed at its outer end and o en at its inner end, and provided with a ispensing aperture in its side adapted to register with the dispensing aperture of the neck vwhen the cap o r elosure-sleeve'is depressed, and
an open spiral spring inside said cap orl closure sleeve to restore itto closed position and prevent clogging and bearing at its outer end against the closed outer end of said sleeve, said spring extending through the open inner end oflsaid cap and being attached at its inner end to said top, said neck and said cap or closure sleeve having inter-engaging guides to prevent the cap or closure sleeve from turning, substantially as specified.
5. The combination with a receptacle top having a neck furnished with a dispensing aperture in its side, of a hollow sliding cap open at its inner end and closed at its outer end and furnished with a dispensing aperture in its 'side and an open spiral spring inside said cap toi-estore it to closed position and prevent clogging and bearing at its outer end against the closed outer end of vsaid cap said spring extending through theA vopen inner end of said cap and engaging .at its inner end said topsubstantially as specified.
6. The combination with a receptacle top having va neck furnished with a dispensing open inner end of said cap and engaging at v its inner end said top, said spring having at its inner end an extension 14; and arm 15, substantially as specified.
