RAILWAY-RAIL JOINT.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that we, JAMES A. J oNEs and WALTER Il. GILL, citizens of the United States, residing at Vf ard, in the county of Kanawha, State of West Virginia, `have invented certain new an d useful Improvements in Railway-Rail Joints; an d we do hereby de clare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use thesaine.
This invention relates to railway rail joints and has for one of its objects to improve the construction and increase the strength and utility of devices of this character.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed joint which will dispense with the necessity for employing clamp bolts or other like fastening means and whereby the joint may be tightened in event of wear or working loose.
TWith these and other objects in view the invention consists in a chair having a rail plate integral therewith at one side and a spaced longitudinal stop rib on the other side, thc inner edge of the rib overhanging the chair and likewise inclined to the longitudinal plane of the chair, a detachable rail plate bearing upon the body of the chair and with its outer edge inclined vertically and substantially parallel vertically to the overhanging portion of the stop rib and with a lip bearing over the stop rib, and a wedge key having vertical inclined sides to correspond to and bear against the vertical in clined sides of the stop rib and of the detachable rail plate.
The invention further consists in. certain novel features of construction as hereafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and in the drawings illustrating the preferred embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved device applied. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the chair with the parts detached. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the wedge key, detached.
The improved device comprises a base member or chair of suflicient length to bear over two or more ties and with an integral rail plate 11 at one side and a stop rib 12 at the other side, the stop rib spaced for a considerable distance from the integral rail plate and with its inner edge at an angle to the longitudinal plane of the chair and its integral rail plate 11, as shown.
Bearing upon the chair between the integral rail plate 11 and the stop rib 12 is a detachable rail plate 13 having its outer edge inclined vertically and substantially parallel to the inclined edge of the stop rib and with a lip 141 bearing over the stop rib. Fitting between the inclined edges of the stop rib and of the detachable rail plate is a wedge key 15 having its side edges inclined to correspond with and to engage against the inclined edges of the stop rib and of the detachable rail plate.
The confronting ends of two rails are represented respectively at 16-17 and provided with the usual transverse clamp bolt holes indicated at 18-19, andthe detachable rail plate 13 is provided with spaced studs 2() fitting into these bolt holes when the rail plate is disposed in a )osition against the rail ends, as shown. 7hen the rail plates are disposed in position the wedge key 15 is driven into its seat and firmly locks the parts and supports them against displacement caused by the severe impact of the passing trains, and in the event of the development of any looseness between the parts a blow upon the wedge key will take up any slack which may thus occur. By this means the joint may be kept tight and all rattling and looseness prevented.
The upper base of the face 10 is provided near one end with spaced recesses 21 and the wedge key 15 is formed with its larger end thickened vertically as at 22 to enter these notches consecutively as the key is driven home, and thus lock the key in position. The plurality of recesses also enable any looseness to be taken up by driving the key farther into its seat until the thickened end enters another recess, as will be obvious. The lip portion 14 ofthe plate 13 next to the larger end of the wedge key is cut away as shown at 23 to expose the upper face of the larger end of the wedge key to permit an implement to be applied to elevate the same to assist in its removal if for any reason the joint is to be disinembered or parts removed. Thus the improved device may be readily detached from the rails if required.
The chair together with its rail plate 11 and rib 12 will be in one single piece preferably of pressed or cast steel, while the detachable rail plate 13 and its lip 14 will be likewise in one single piece of pressed7 rolled or cast metal, preferably steel, while the wedge key 15 will preferably be of hardened steel.
The improved device is simple in construction, can be inexpensively manufactured and applied and will ellectually hold the rails without the necessity for employing clamp bolts or other parts which are liable to become loose under the severe strains to which devices of this character are subjected. This improved device may be applied to rails already in use, and the bolt holes utilized to receive the pins 20, so that the rails may be used in the condition in which they are found. A recess 241 is preferably formed in the thickened end of the key 15, to receive a releasing` implement.
What is claimed, is:
1. A railway rail oint comprising a chair having a uniform upper surface and withan V integral rail plate at one side of the uniform surface and a stop rib at the other side of the uniform surface, said stop rib having its inner face overhanging and inclined to the longitudinal plane of the same, a detachable rail plate at the opposite side from the integral rail plate and with its lower face bearing upon the uniform surface of the chair and its outer edge inclined to the perpendicular and substantially parallel to the vertical plane of the overhanging portion of the stop` rib, and with a lip extending over the stop rib, and a wedge key bearing upon the chair between the inclined edges of the stop rib and the detachable rail plate and with its side edges inclined to correspond therewith.
2. The combination with the confronting ends of two railway rails having spaced apertures in their vertical webs, of a rail joint comprising a chair having a uniform upper surface and with an integral rail plate at one side of the uniform surface and a stop rib at the other side of the uniform surface, said stop rib having its inner face overhanging and inclined to the longitudinal plane of the chair7 a detachable rail plate having spaced studs engaging in said rail apertures and with its lower face bearing upon the body of the chair and its outer edge inclined to the perpendicular and substantially parallel to the vertical plane of the overhanging portion of the sto rib and with a lip extending over the stop ri a wedge key bearing upon the chair between the inclined edges of the stop rib and of the detachable rail plate and with its side edges inclined to correspond therewith.
3. A railway rail oint comprising a chair having an integral rail plate and a stop rib spaced therefrom at the other side, said stop rib having its inner face overhanging the chair and inclined to the longitudinal plane of the same and said chair having a plurality of spaced recesses annexed to the stop rib, a detachable rail plate at the opposite side from the integral rail plate and with its lower face bearing upon the body of the chair and its outer edge inclined to the perpendicular and substantially parallel to the vertical plane of the overhanging portion of the stop rib, and with a lip extending over the stop rib, and a wedge key bearing upon the chair between the inclined edges of the stop rib and the detachable rail plate and with its side edges inclined to correspond therewith and with the larger end thickened to engage in said recesses.
