Be it known that I, ALOYSIUS MOHUGH, a

opposite this plate 2 and at the otheror outer Kees-Rocks, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway- Rail Splices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,such as will enable oth-- ers skilled in the art to which it pertainsto make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved splice bar, for railway rails, and consists in certain 4 is a sectional plan view of the finished splice,

To put my invention into practice with ordinary railway rails 1, I provide a plate 2 adapted to fit against the inner side of the web of the rail, and pass over the inner flange, and beneath the rail toa point a short distance beyond the outer flange, and terminate Arranged side of the rail 1 is'another' plate 4 the lower edge of which is beveled to fit neatly against the inclined surface 5, and the upper edge beneath the-tread of the rail, as will be seen by reference to Fig. 1 on the drawings. Spikes are now driven through the openings 3 at each end of the plate 2, and the splice or connection completed by driving spikes through the openings 8 of the plate-4 in a manner that the same will draw the said plate inward to wedge and support the tread of the rail 1, thereby forming a splice without the use of bolts or nuts, and rendering the samesolld, rigid, and substantial.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and .desire to secure by LettersPatent is- Ih combination with, the rails 1, the bar 2, constructed to fit neatly about the inner side of the web, the inner flange, andbase of the I rail, the inclined surface 5 projecting beyond the outer flange of the rails, the bar 4 one edge resting on said inclined surface 5,'and the otherbeneath the tread of the rails,'the pins 6 passing through the rails into each of the said plates, and the openings 3, and 8 formed in the plates in a manner that when spiked to the ties the same will draw the two plates together, all arranged and combined for service, substantially as'and for the purpose described.
