RAIL-JOINT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 431,835, dated July 8, 1890.
Application filed May 5, 1890. Serial No. 350,573. (No model.)
Be it known that I, VICTOR ANGERER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Rail-Joints, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to construct an improved rail-joint adapted to secure two flat rails together in line with each other.
My invention is especially applicable in securing the rail-sections of a portable railway-track and portable cross-overs.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l isa plan View illustrating the improved railjoint. Fig. 2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 1 2,Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a per spective view of a plate detached.
A A are the two rails, which in this instance are shown as grooved rails; but it will be understood that other forms of rails may be used without departing from my invention.
B is a plate of the peculiar form shown in Fig. at, having an upwardly-bent lip 75 at one side at right angles to the base of the plate, while at the opposite side of the plate is an upwardly and inwardly bent lip d, inclined longitudinally in respect to the lip 17. The plate B is secured to the rail A by rivets or bolts a a, and the end of the rail A is adapted to the projecting/portion of the plate and abuts against the rail A. Pins 0 a, secured in the present instance to the lip b of the plate by riveting, are adapted 'to holes 6 e in the edge of the rail A, preventing the rail from moving longitudinally. Between the opposite side of the rail A and the lip d of the plate B is a wedge D, which is prevented from moving longitudinally by a bolt f, which passes through a slot g in the lip d and'into the body of the wedge, thus securing the wedge in place after it has been driven up. The rail A can be readily removed from the rail A by first withdrawing the bolts f, then forcing out the wedge D and moving the rail laterally to free it from the pins 0, after which it can be moved either vertically or longitudi nally. The screw-bolt f not only holds the Wedge in place after said wedge has been driven, but also confines the wedge to the plate and prevents it from being lost during transportation, as it will be understood that this joint is intended mainly for use'in connection with portable cross-overs which are laid upon the surface, the rails not being fastened down.
I claim as my invention,
1. The, combination of the rails with the tie-plate secured to one of said rails, and having flanges, one of which is tapered, with a wedge adapted to fit between the edge of the rail and the tapered flange, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the abutting rails A A, the plate secured to the rails A, and projections or pins connecting the rail A and the plate, substantially as specified.
3. The combination of the abutting rails A A, the flanged plate secured to the rail A, and projections on the flange adapted to orifices in the rail A, substantially as set forth.
l. The combination of the abuttingrails, the plate secured to one of said rails, flanges on said plate, with a projection on one of said flanges, and a wedge inserted between the opposite edge of the rail and the opposite flange, said rail having a hole in which the projection rests, substantially as described.
5. The combination of the abutting rails, a plate secured to one of said rails, and having flanges, one of which is tapered and slotted, as described, with a wedge and a securing-bolt adapted to said slot in the flange and to the wedge, substantially as set forth.
