To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRA D. CADY, of Min` neapolis, I-Iennepin county, Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates particularly to farm gates and particularly to that class used for closing roadways.
The object of the invention is to provide a gate which can be easily and quickly opened to admit the passage of a person or a team, as desired.
A further object is to provide a gate, which cannot sag or drag on the ground, as is usual in gates of this hind, but can be easily moved to an open or closed position and operated by a person of little strength.
My invention consists generally in a gate, comprising a hinged frame portion and a sliding portion supported by the hinged portion and adapted to move therein to close or open the roadway. y
Further, the invention consists in means f for locking the sliding portion of the gate against premature movement.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view, illustrating the invention in use, the gate being in an open position, Fig. 2 is a front elevation, illustrating the gate partially opened, Figs. 3 and 4; are detail, sectional views, illustrating the locking de vice.
In the drawing, 2 represents a stationary post arranged on one side of the roadway.
3 and 4 represent stationary posts on the opposite side of the road way connected by a cross bar 5 and having a space between them, into which the end of the sliding sec tion of the gate is inserted.
The gate is composed of two sections, one of which I will designate by the reference letter A and the other by the reference letter B. Section A is composed of bars 6 and 7 held in parallel relation by means of braces i 8, the bar 6 being hinged to the post 2 at 9 and is adapted to swing thereon. The sec tion B of the gate consists of end rails 10 and 11, a middle rail 12 and rods 13 connecting the end rails 10 and 11. The rods 13 extend through and are arranged to slide in holes 14 provided in the bars 6 and 7 and the bars have mortises 15 formed therein rovided with anti-friction rollers 16, on wiich the rail 12 is adapted to slide and support the sition.

For the purpose of locking its sliding section, I provide plates 17 and 18 on the rail 12 having sockets 19 therein. into which the end 2l) of a hook-shaped locking device 21 is adapted to enter, said locking device being supported `within the recess 22 in the bar 7. A plate 23 is carried by the bar 7 and is mounted with a recess 241 in said post and is provided with holes 25 that are adapted to register with the sockets 19 in the rail 12. Between the .holes 25 is a blank area on the plate 23 against which the end 2O of the locking device bears when the section B is being moved back and forth in its supports, and I am thus able to prevent contact of the locking device with the rail 12 and the rubbing and wearing action of said device on said rail. The plateI 23 is centered in its socket by means of springs 26. A spring 27 is provided on the locking device 22 and. its tension normally holds the end in` contact with the plate 23. The plate 23 is capable of longitudinal movement in its socket to bring one or the other of the holes in position to register with the end 20 of the locking device. This movement of the plate 23 is effected by the engagement of a lip 28 provided on the plate 18 and projecting outwardly in position to engage one end of the plate 2l) and move it lengthwise a sufficient distance to allow the end 20 of the locking device to drop into one of the holes 25 and enter the socket 19 when it reaches a point opposite the locking device and the gate is in closed or open po In the middle of the road way I provide a concave seat 29 for the bar 7. This seat or step is stationary and nearly level with the surface of the ground, so that it will not interfere in any way with the passage of a vehicle and is designed to the lower end of the bar 7 and support the gate in its closed position, without in any way interfering with the sliding movement of the section B.
In operating the gate, the locking device is released and the section B moved on its bearings until the rail 1() contacts with the bar 7. The gate will then be centered on its hinges and may be swung thereon to the position indicated in Fig. l. In this position, the sliding gate section is perfectly balanced and no effort is required to swingl the hinged section of the gate from its position across the road way to a point at one side of IIO CII
the road way, as indicated in Fig. l. lhen it is desired to close the gate, the hinged section is swung across the road way until the bar S engages its concave seat 29 and then, upon releasing the locking device, the sliding section is moved to completely close the road way and extend entirely across the passage between the posts 2, 3, and 4.
It will be noted that if a person walking or on horse back wishes to pass the gate, it will only be necessary to release the locking device and move the sliding section, which will open a passage one half the width of the road way. In case however, it is desired to d rive a vehicle through the gate, the sliding section will be pushed to its balanced position and then the hinged section of the gate swung on its hinges until it assumes the position indicated in Fig. l.
The gate may be made of any suitable material and braced and strengthened in various ways, according to the weight of the material used and the dimensions of the gate.
The gate passes between the pair of posts at one side of the road way and is held thereby against movement in either direction by animals, which may attempt to open the gate. The seat on the post in the middle of the roadway is inclined, so that the gate will slip thereon and slide to its seat, without any liar or shock. At the same time, the middle portion of the gate will be supported and prevented from sagging.
I claim as my invention:
l. The combination, with a post, of a gate section hinged thereon and comprising vertical bars, and brace bars connecting them, said gate section being adapted to extend partially across the roadway, and the bars of said gate section having guides therein, and a second gate section composed of upright bars and rods slidable in the guides in said 'first-named section and connecting the bars of said second-named section, and said second section being adapted to slide in said :first section to a position where the weight of the gate will be equally distributed on both sides of its hinges, means for locking said sliding section, and means for rendering said locking means operative at a predetermined point in the movement of said sliding section substantially as described.
2. A gate, comprising a hinged section, composed of upright parallel bars, and bracing means between them, a post whereon one of said bars is hinged, said bars having guides therein, and a sliding gate section composed of rods, and upright end bars therefor, said rods being slidable in the guides in said hinged section and capable of movement to allow the weight of the gate to be equally distributed on both sides of the hinges thereof, and means for locking said sliding section against premature movement and means for rendering said locking means operative at a predetermined point in the movement of said sliding section.
3. The combination, with a post, of a gate section hinged thereon and comprising upright bars, and braces between them, a seat adapted to be placed in the middle of the roadway to engage and support one of the upright bars of said gate section, a sliding gate section supported in said hinged section and movable back and forth therein and capable of adjustment to distribute the weight equally on each side of the hinges of said hinged section, and means for locking said sliding section in its open and closed position, said means including a sliding bolt, a plate having holes 'therein adapted to receive said bolt and mounted on said hinged section, and said bolt being adapted to enter a socket provided in said sliding section at a predetermined point in the movement thereof, substantially as described.
Ll. A gate, comprising a hinged section, means supporting the same at one end, a sliding section carried by said hinged section and adapted to form a continuation thereof and complete the closing of the roadway, a locking device carried by said hinged section and adapted to engage said sliding section, and said locking device comprising a bolt and means for holding it out of contact with said sliding section, and means automatically releasing said bolt to allow it to slip into its socket in said sliding section at a predetermined point in the movement of said section, substantially as described.
5. A gate, comprising a hinged section, a sliding section carried thereby and adapted to form a continuation thereof and complete the closing of the roadway, a locking bolt carried by said hinged section, and means for automatically releasing said bolt to allow it to slip into a sochet provided in said sliding section at a predetermined point in the movement of said section.
