UNITED STATES PATENTV OFFICE.
GEORGE w. BUssE'Y, on JUDA, WISCONSIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 461,317, dated October 13, 1891.
Application filed April 29, 1891.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. BUssEY,'a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Juda, in the county of Green and State of Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a front or side elevation. Fig. 2 is a top plan view, and Fig. 3 is a detail view.
This invention has relation to certain improvements in gates; and it consist-s in the novel construction thereof, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the letter A represen ts the gate proper, which consists of the main rail B, supporting the upper rail b and having pivoted in slots in its under edge the vertical pieces c c, to which are secured the longitudinal lower bars or rails CZ d.
C represents the supporting-post, of bifurcated or double form, in which the main rail B is pivotally hung, extending therethrough and some distance in the rear. A bail-lever D has its arms c" hung on the ends of the rod CZ, on which the rail B is pivoted, its
transverse portion d resting on the projecting end o f the rail B, as shown, and to the forward lower ends of the arms CZ are connected rods or links fthe upper ends of which are connected to the levers F, pivotally supported upon braces G and extending at right' angles from the gate in opposite directions along the road or path in position to be reached by a person on foot or in a wagon. The rear end of the rail B carries a weight l-I, sufficiently heavy to partially counterbalance the gate. When the outer end of either of the leversF is depressed by means of the rod f, the transverse portion (l of thebail-lever will be forced down upon the rail B sufficiently with the aid of the weight to raise the gate to a vertical position in the post C, the lower rails d d, by their pivotal arrangement, as above described, falling back out of the way, taking the Serial No. 390,921. (No model.) v
position indicated in the drawings. A catch piece or lug-Zt is pivotally secured to the rail B at the rear of the post and is connected by a link 7c with the bail-lever. Vhen the gate is in its vertical position, the piece or lug falls into engagement with a catch It, carried by the post, and prevents the gate falling by the action of the wind or from other causes.
To close the gate, the 'outer end of either lever is depressed, raising the bail into engagement with a stop Z on the rail B, at the same time releasing the catch. It will be seen that a double leverage is exerted to close the gate by means of the bail bearing against the stop Z and at the same time lifting on the link lo as the lever is depressed. The lower rails d d will by gravity assume their original position.
M is a fastening-bar, which is arranged to slide on the rail B into engagement with .a catch on the front post under the action of a spring m. The rear e'nd of this bar is connected by. a chain or link M to the bail-lever, so that as it is depressed the bar will be drawn backward from engagement with its catch, permitting the gate to rise. Vhen the gate is closed, the spring m again effects the fastening.
A suitable support P may be provided for scribed can be conveniently operated by thel driver without necessitating his dismounting, either in opening or closing, the action of the parts being simple and effective.
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the gate pivotally hung in its post and adapted to be raised into verticalposition, of the pivotal bail-leverand the operating-levers having a connection with said bail-lever, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the folding gate pivotally hung in its post and partially counterbalanced, of the pivoted bail-lever, the operating-levers connected to said bailelever, and the catches or lock'fo'r holding the gate in its open and closed position, both said catches or locks voperated by said bail-lever, substantially as specilied.
3. The gate comprising the main rail, the
