Description

ihriird mes EZRA CAsWELL, or LYONS, NEW YORK, AssIGNoR To HI'MSLF- 13H-121 @Nimh AND PHILIP GANSE, JR, OF SAME PLACE.
Leners Paten: No. 92,7151, dated .my 2o, 1869.
The Schedule referred to in these Lettera Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it 'may concern through the linea-x, iig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish animproved means of connecting the cover or lid with and securing it tothe body ofthe tub, soas to make the said tub perfectly tight, and which shall at thc'same time be simple in construction, effective in operation, and easily and conveniently operated; and
It consists in the construction and combination of the various parts, as hereinafter more fully described.
A'is' the body of the tub, which is rabbeted around the outer side of its upper edge, as shown lin iig. v
B is the lid or cover, which is formed with 'a hoop or fiance b u on the lower surface of its outer edfe projecting downward, so as to enter the rabbet of the body A.-
lhe joint is made tightA by hemp, cotton, or other suitable packing, placed in the rabbet beneath the hoop Vor iiange b.
rlhe rear'partvof the lid B projects in the rear of the body A of thc tub, and is hinged to supports G, attached to the rear side of the tub A by the rod D, which passes through the eyes ofthe eye-bolts E, adjustably secured to the said projecting part of the cover, B, and to the saidsupports C by washers and nuts,
as shown in fig. 2, so that the hinging point of the saidlid or cover may be thrown far enough in the rear of the tub, to allow the said lid to shut down squarely upon the said tub. Y l
F is an eye-bolt, the eye of which is pivoted to the support G attached to the forward side of the tub A.
The bolt F, when turned up, enters a slotin the projecting end of the bar H attached to the upper side of the lid' or cover B.
The eye-bolt F is provided with a washer and handnut, I, for securing the cover B- firmly in its place.4
To the sides of the tub A are attached thelower parts of the uprights J, the upper ends of which are connected by the cross-bar K, which not only supportsthe upper ends of the said uprights-J, but also serves as a handle to the tub. u L are two pairs of toggle-bars, the ends ofthe lower bars of which rest upon the upper side of the cover B,
and the ends of the upper bars o f which rest against shoulders or stops M, formed upon or attached to the upper parts ofthe uprights J, as shown in iig. l.
N are toggle-hars, the ends of which are pivoted to the toggle-bars L at their joints, as shown in fig. 1, thus forming a triple toggle-joint.'
O is a stop'bar attached'to the upper side of one of the bars N, and projecting over the other one of saidbars, to prevent, the said toggle-bars from dropping down out of line. v
This device enables the cover B to be iirmly forced down and'locked upon the tub A.
Having .thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure-byLet- Yters Patent, isl 1. In combination with the tub A, rabbe'ted on its upper edge, the cover B, provided with the fiange l1', the rod D, the eye-bolt E, andits nut, the supports C, eye-bolt F, nut I, and the bar H, all arranged substantially as herein shown and described, for the pur-' pose speciiied.
2. The toggle-bars L N, in combination with the frame J vK M and cover 4B of the tub, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. v
The above specification'of my invention signed b y me, this 6th day of May, 1869. Y
- EZRA GASWELL.
