Description

W. W. ALLEN.
GUARD RAIL CLAMP.
APPLICATION TILED SBPT.18,190'7.
\r .Hw A v. lll' i v IHILIIII VI/2727955 as WILLIAM W. ALLEN, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
GUARD-RAIL CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 29, 1909.
Application filed September 16, 1907. Serial No. 393,127.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM IV. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Guard Rail Clamps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of my specification.
My invention relates to a guard rail clamp and its object is to produce a device of this character, of simple and economical construction which will rigidly hold the guard rail in lace.
My improvement is constructed in such manner as to act as a rail brace in addition to performing its function as a clamp. Its advantages will appear more clearly as I proceed with my specification.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a main rail and guard rail showing my improved guard rail clamp in position. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the rails showing the guard rail clamp in end elevation. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same. big. 4 is a perspective view and Fig. 5 is a side elevation, the two figures showing respectively the parts of which my improved guard rail clamp is composed.
The device comprises essentially a fixed member which is spiked to the tie in a position to brace and hold the guard rail, and clamping members connected thereto, which engage the foot of the main rail and hold it rigidly in position, there being between the two rails the usual spacing block E which determines their distance apart.
In the drawings A is the fixed member, and B B the clamping members.
C is the main rail and D the guard rail.
The fixed member consists of a portion (a which is like the usual rail brace, provided with an extended vertical web a which engages the web of the guard rail; an extended horizontal base a suitably shaped to rest upon the foot of the guard rail, and beyond the limits thereof, on the tie; and vertical webs a which connect the base to the vertical web a so as to brace and rigidly hold the said web in position. The base a .is of sufficient length to extend beyond the sides of the tie, where it is provided with ears I).
The clamps B in their preferred form, are simply long bolts, having hooked ends I) which engage the foot of the main rail, the
other ends of the bolts passing through the cars Z) and being )rovided with nuts I), by means of which tiey are fastened in place and the clamps tightened. The base a of the fixed member is provided with three spike holes A through which the member is spiked to the tie. The main rail is spiked to the tie as indicated at C.
To apply my improved guard rail clamp, the main rail is first spiked in position and the guard rail then put along side it with the usual spacing block E between them. The fixed member A is then placed on the tie in position against the guard rail and the clamping members passed under the rail and through the ears I) so as to bring the hooks b into engagement with the foot of the main rail. The nuts b are then screwed on to the clamping members and by their engagement with the ears I), the clamping members drawn into place. The fixed member is then spiked to the tie through the spike holes A.
The device thus described is quite e'llicient in performing its intended function and no jarring of the train will cause the parts to loosen up so as to permit any spreading of the rails.
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to claim as new and to cover by Letters Patent is 1. A guard rail clamp comprising, a fixed member in the -form of a rail brace, having a web adapted to engage the rail web and a base adapted to rest upon the foot of the rail and upon the tie, said base being projected beyond the sides of the tie and provided at its extremities with ears, and clamping members in the form of bolts, passing through the ears in said fixed member and provided at their ends with hooks al'lapted to engage the foot of the other rail.
A guard rail clamp comprising, a fixed member in the form of a rail brace, having a web adapted to engage the rail web and a base adapted to rest upon the foot of the rail and upon the tie, said base being projected beyond the sides of the tie and provided at its extremities with ears, and clamping members adapted to engage the other rail and means to adjustably secure the same through the ears of the fixed member.
