COUPLING-PIN LIFTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 29, 1909.
Application filed December 23, 1908. Serial No. 468,958.
To all 207mm it may concern:
Be it known that we, Jesse M. ARTHUR and Jon): P. BIRMINGHAM, citizens of the United States, residing at Lexington, in the county of Rockbridge and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coupling-Pinliifters; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended :laims.
()ur invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is an end view of a car showing our improved pin lifting apparatus mounted .upon the knuckle of thecoupler. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the car showing in top plan View the coupler and the attachment, and Fig. is an enlarged detail iew of the invention.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a car and B a coupler which, in the present instance, is shown of the J annoy type and provided with the usual knuckle B. l) designates a bracket member fastened to the car and in which the bracket rod E is positioned and F is a strap or oar fastened at itscnds to the lower por tion of the car adjacent to one side thereof. rassing through said knuckle is a pin G, and ii designates a forked bar having two arms H and H which are adapted to straddle said knuckle and each of said arms is provided I with an eye N adapted to receive said pin G and hold the bar preferably in the position shown in the drawings. Each ot said arms is preferably bent at an angle as at O, as
. clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and
f the shank portion of said bar is bifurcated as at K for the reception of the in lifting lever Q which is pivotally niounte upon a pin R passing through registering a ertures in said shank portion. The inner our of said lever or pin lifter is provided with a hook Q adapted to engage the eye of the coupling in S in the manner-shown clearly in Fig. 1. 0 the drawings. The :handle end of said lever Q is positioned adjacent to one side of the car, the lever being held behind the stra or bar F.
\Vhcn the parts are adjuste. together in the manner shown, it will be noted that a car may be uncoupled conveniently by the brake man or other pcrson'by simply pressing his foot upon the lever, thus leaving his hands free for signaling or other purposes and without danger of injury to life and limb by going lers. As the end of said lever which is connected to the )in ovcrbalanccs the handle end, the pin will cause the lever to be thrown back to its normal position after the pin has been released.
What we claim to be new is 1. In combination with a car and coupler, a coupling pin therein, a bracket member pivotally mounted upon the head of the coupler, a lever pivot-ally connected to said bracket member and having a hooked end adapted to engage the eye in the coupling pin, as forth.
2. in combination with a car, a car coupler having a pivoted knuckle and a coupling pin, a bracket member having two arms adapted to straddle the knuckle, means for fastening the bracket member to the coupler, and a lever pivotally connected to said bracket member and engaging said coupling pin, as set forth.
3. In combination with a car, a car coupler having a pivoted knuckle and a coupling pin, a bracket member having two arms terminating each in an eye, a pin pivotally connecting the knuckle to said coupler and passin through said eyes, a lever pivotally mounte upon said bracket arm am connected to said coupling pin, as set forth.
4. In combination with a car, a car coupler having a pivoted knuckle and a coupling pin, a bracket member having two arms terminating each in an eye, a pin pivotally connecting through said eyes, said bracket member having an upwardly turned slotted shank portion, a pivot pin passing through sald between the cars and adjacent to the coup.
the knuckle to said coupler and passing slotted portion, a lever pivotally mounted upon said pivot pin and having a hook at one end engaglng the eye in the coupling pin, as set forth.
5. In combination with a car, a car coupler having a pivoted knuckle and a coupling pin, a bracket member having two arms terminating each in an eye, a in-pivotally connecting the knuckle to sa' coupler and passing through said e es, said bracket member having an upwar ly turned slotted shank portion, a pivot pin passin through said slotted portion, a lever pivotal y mounted upon said pivot pin and having a hook at one end en- Witnesses:
