RAILWAY DRAFT DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnri-i O. HARTMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Collinwood, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and usefulRailway Draft Device, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to car couplers of the Janney type, and has for its object the provision of a draw head capable of swinging laterally to conform with the relative lateral movement of coupled cars.
Another object is to simplify and otherwise improve upon devices of this character without diminishing their strength or efficiency.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter de scribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings, the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings: Figure 1 is a plan view of the car coupler a portion of the draw head being broken away. Fig 2 is a central vertical longitudinal section through the coupler. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the draw head. Fig. 4t is a perspective view of the knuckle.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference, 11 designates a draw bar adapted to be connected to a car structure in any preferred manner.
The front end of the drawbar 11 is formed with a head 24, having a pair of spaced forwardly-projecting horns 25 between which is a web 26, to which the draw head 27 of the coupler is pivoted. The draw head is similar in contour to an ordinary J anney draw head, there being a forwardlyprojecting horn or guard arm 28 at one side, and two spaced forwardly-projecting ears 29 on the opposite side, between which ears the knuckle 30 is pivoted by a pin 31. end of the draw head is formed with spaced ears 30 extending between the horns 25, and bet-ween which ears the web 26 is received, a pivot pin 32 passing through the ears and the web. The knuckle 30 has a projecting tail piece 33 which is engageable by a coupling pin 34 passing through alined openings in the ears 29, for locking the knuckle in closed position. In looking position the pin extends in front of the tail piece, which prevents the knuckle from swinging to open position.
At 36 is indicated a coiled spring which automatically throws the knuckle to open position when released by the coupling pin 34. One end of this spring is connected to the tail piece of the knuckle and the other end to the head 24:.
The coupler herein described is simple in structure, and reliable in operation, and can be readily locked and unlocked. The pivot 32 is vertical so that the drawhead is free to swing in a horizontal plane laterally, and thus follow a corresponding movement of the car, as when going around a curve, without any danger of uncoupling or strain on cylinder or piston rod.
