NON-REFILLABLE BOTTLE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS WV. LEONARD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Non-Refillable Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improvement in nonre'lillable bottles and has for an object to provide a novel construction in which the ordinary external appearance of the bottle will be preserved, the bottle neck will be strengthened where desired, the bottle can be easily filled and sealed, and in which the dispensing of the contents of the bottle can be readily accomplished, the sealing devices being adapted to move from scaling to unsealed position for such purpose, as will more fully appear hereinafter and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing-Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of a bottle embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross section thereof on about line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross section on about line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an inverted view illustrating the position of parts for dispensing the liquid from the bottle, and Fig. 5 shows a somewhat dif- .ferent form of check valve.
The bottle has the body A, which may be of any suitable form and the neck B, which is contracted at B to form a seat for the check valve A, which check valve may be globular as shown in Fig. 1, or may, if desired, be of the pear-shape shown in Fig. 5 or of other suitable form. The neck is thickened and thus reinforced from its mouth downward and this reinforcement is provided on the inner side of the neck, thus furnishing the desired strength and affording the shoulder C at the lower end of the thickened portion without affecting the external appearance of the neck and at the same time this forms the broad shoulder C at the inner end of the thickened portion of the neck and a broad seat at the lip C for the packing ring D, see Fig. 1. Grooves E are formed longitudinally in the inner face of the thickened portion of the neck and afford passages for the discharge of the liquid when the bottle is adjusted to the position shown in Fig. 1 and in the lower or inner end of the thickened portion I provide in the shoulder notches 0*, preferably arranged diametrically opposite each other and adapted to receive the ends of a spring bar F, which constitutes the means for retaining the stopper G when the latter is adjusted into the neck of the bottle. This stopper G is fitted to the neck of the bottle,is provided at its outer end with a head G, which overlies the lip of the bottle neck, and the stopper is of such length as to extend, when in the position shown in Fig. 1, down to and bear at its inner end against the valve A and hold the said valve to its seat when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 1. The packing D fits beneath the head G of the stopper G and is pressed thepeby tightly against the lip of the bottle DECK.
The spring bar F extends through a trans verse opening G in the lower portion of the stopper G and the bar F has its ends F upturned to bear beneath the shoulder at the lower end of the thickened portion of the bottle neck and preferably within the notches formed in the said shoulder so that when the parts are in the )osition shown in Fig. 1, the spring bar F will serve the double purpose of preventing the withdrawal of the stopper G, and in connection with the notches will prevent any rotary movement or turning of the stopper. In the position shown in Fig. I it may he preferred to form the bar F in such manner that its ends will not quite touch the base of the notches C in order to give a greater movement to the stopper G in adjusting the said stopper to position to permit the dispensing of the contents of the bottle. In this position it will be noticed the ends of the spring bar F will hear outwardly against the inner walls of the bottle neck and prevent any accidental movement of the stopper to its outermost position, in which it would permit the pouring oil of the contents of the bottle.
In operation the stopper and ball A being removed from the neck, the bottle may be filled in any desired manner, the valve A applied, the packing D placed on the lip O and the stopper G pressed into the bottle neck, the ends of the spring bar springing up against the stopper until the latter has been inserted to the position shown in F ig. 1, when the ends of the bar F will spring outwardly below the shoulder C and the stop per may be turned to adjust it to position in which the ends of the bar F will spring into the notches C The bottle will then be securely closed and the contents thereof be retained until such time as it is desired to dispense them, when the packing D may be cut away with a knife or other implement and the stopper be pulled out slightly to release the ball A, when by inverting the bottle to the position shown in Fig. 4, its contents may be dispensed, flowing out through the open valve seat B, thence out of the groove or grooves E in the inner face of the bottle neck as will be understoodfrom the foregoing description.
The stopper and the ball are of glass and the spring bar of metal or other suitable elastic material.
It will be noticed that the bottle neck is reinforced by its thickened portion fromthe outer end or lip of the neck to the inwardly facing shoulder with which the locking bar engages.
