Be it known that I, JOHN M. L. Gnonv, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Umbrellas, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to an attachment for umbrellas and parasols, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a novel attachment or fixture for holding the shield or cover of an umbrella when the same is not being used.

Another object of this invention is to com bine a name plate and shield holder that can be made a fixture in connection with an umbrella or as an attachment for umbrellas at present used.

To this end, I have devised a simple, inexpensive and durable novelty that obviates the necessity of carrying an umbrella shield in the pocket or entirely discarding the same when an umbrella is purchased. By my invention, it is possible after removing the shield from an umbrella to fold the same and place it in engagement with the stick of the umbrella between the notch and the runner, whereby it will not be observed when the umbrella is being used, either in a folded or open position.

The detail construction entering into my invention will be presently described and then specifically pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my attachment as applied to the stick of an umbrella. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same, Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a modified form of attachment, and Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view of my attachment.

In the accompanying drawings, 1 designates the stick of an umbrella as having a notch Zand a runner 3.

An attachment in accordance with this invention is located upon the stick 1 between the notched collar and a runner 3, and comprises a split sleeve 4 and a resilient arm. The latter consists of a rectangular body portion 4 having projecting from its lower end a bowed-shape extension 5 which frictionally engages the stick and is formed integral with the top edge of the collar 4. 4 is an offset extension 5 having its terminus beaded as at 5 the said beaded terminus frictionally engaging with the stick 1. The body portion l of the resilient arm has each of its longitudinal edges flanged as at 6 to constitute a means for retaining a nameplate 7 in position.

The sleeve 4 is adapted to 'frictionally embrace the stick 1 and in addition to frictionally holding the sleeve upon the stick, I provide said sleeve with an opening for the pin 8 of the umbrella stick, said pin being commonly used to limit the upward movement of a runner 3.

In Fig. 3 of the drawings, I have illustrated a slight modification of my invention, wherein an ordinary piece of steel Wire 9 is permanently fixed to the stick 1 of an umbrella, this piece of wire constituting a resilient arm having a bowed-shape 9 and a beaded terminus 9 each of which frictionally engages with the stick and retains an umbrella shield or cover in engagement therewith.

The bowed-shape portions 5 and beaded end 5 of the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2 maintain the body portion of the resilient arm away from the stick and the bowed portion 9 and beaded terminus 9 perform a like function in connection with the form of the device shown in Fig. 3.

The construction illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings constitutes an attachment for umbrellas at present used or already mamifactured, while the piece of wire or re silient arm 9 is designed as a fixture with which umbrellas are equipped when manu factured.

It is apparent from the foregoing description that my attachment serves as a combined shield holder and name plate, and while not interfering with the raising and lowering of an umbrella, it will be of considerablo convenience to a person using an umbrella.

The attachment is made of light and durable metal, such as aluminum or sheet metal and can be finished according to ones esthctic taste.

Having now described my invention what I claim as new, is

1. An attachment for umbrellas comprising a resilient arm embodying a body portion, a beaded terminus and a bowed-shape portion, and means connected with the bowed-shape portion for attaching said arm to the stick of an umbrella, said bowed portion and beaded terminus frictionally engaging the umbrella stick and maintaining the body portion out of engagement with said stick. 1

An attachment for umbrellas comprising a resilient arm embodying a body portion, a beaded terminus and a bowed-shape portion, and means connected with the bowed-shape portion for attaching said arm to the stick of an umbrella, said bowed por- 7 tion and beaded terminus irictionally engaging the umbrella stick and maintaining the body portion out of engagement with said stick, said body portion having longitudinal flanges for connecting a name-plate to the arm.

An attachment for umbrellas comprising a split sleeve adapted to frictionally engage the umbrella stick, and a resilient arm embodying a body portion having a bowedshape portion projecting therefrom and formed integral with said sleeve, said arm i'urther embodying an offset portion having a beaded terminus, said bowed-shape portion and beaded. terminus adapted to engage the umbrella stick for maintaining a body portion out of engagement with the stick.

4. An attachment for umbrellas comprising a split sleeye adapted to frictionally engage the umbrella stick, and a resilient arm embodying a body portion having a bowedshape part projecting therefrom and formed integral with said sleeve, said arm further embodying an offset portion having a beaded terminus, said bowed-shape portion and beaded terminus adapted to engage the umbrella stick for maintaining a body portion out of engagement with the stick, said body portion provided with longitudinal flanges for connecting a name-plate to said arm.
