JAMES BROTSON, Oi CLEVELAND, OHIO.
CLOSET-SE AT BUMPER.
Application filed June 1, 1908.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES Buorson, a citizen of the United States, and resident oi" Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahega and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Closet-Seat Bumpers, ot which I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The objects of the invention are to provide elastic bumpers for a closet seat, and the particular improvements designed in this specific form ot invention over the past art are to provide a more etlicient, convenient and practical means for securing the bumpcrs and at the same time a securing means which will not interfere with their removal when they have become worn or have lost their elasticity.
The invention in detail comprises means for securing the bumpers to the upper edge of tl a closet bowl and also has reference to a metallic engaging surface for the bumpers.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, hereinafter l'urther described and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure ,l is a longitudinal section of a bowl showing the manner of arranging the bumpers in the rim therctor; Fig. 2 is a vertical section through a portion of the rim showing a bumper of elastic and vulcanizablo material, resting in a socket lormcd in the rim of the bowl; Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a bumper and Fig. -;l a top view thereof; Fig. 5 is a vertical section of the rim of a bowl showing the bumper inserted therein and a metallic but t on inserted in the bumper to provide a more durable striking surface therefor.
In the views the bowl B is shown to be provided with a rim 1, 2 is a socket sunk in the aforesaid rim which ilarcs laterally at the base. Uponthe base of this socket a pyramidal elevation 23 is shown the apex of which is located underneath the reduced portion P oi the socket opening, i is the bumper formed of elastic, compressible, vulcanizable ma- Specification of Letters Patent.

terial such as rubber. This bumper is provided with a protruding head, with a neck S, and with a llaring b so 'lhe neck and base are adapted to iit closely within the socket, and the )aso ol' the bumper is recssed at (3 so as to make the edges of the base more flexible so that they can be compressed into the narrowed neck of the socket. A turthcr object of the recess is to iit over the elevation 3 in the bottom of the socket, so that the thin edges ol' the base of the bumper will be forced outward by the sides of the elevation and spread to form a dovetail closely titling the sides of the dovetail socket. The bowl rim is preferably raised about the neck ol the socket opening at 7 to give sullicicnt thickness ol" material in which to form the socket. 'lhis lip or raised portion 7 about the edge of each socket opening 2 serves also to give protection to the bumper, from water lying on the rim ol the bowl, and to keep the bumper dry, since the action oi the closet water would rot the bumper, and at the same time gives grcater thickness to the material ol' the bowl.
In Fig. 5 a metallic button 8 is shown having a stem 10 and a reduced head 9 at the lower end which is inserted in an opening ill ol similar shape to the stem and head. This metallic button can be made oi" aluminum or other substantially non-oxidizing metal it de sired and serves to rcint'orce the bumper and increase its longc .'it v.
'lhe bumpers can be made of any diameter 1' length without departing from the spirit i the invention and can be used with closets l' any material.
llaving described the invention what ll. claim as new and desire to secure by liiettcrs Patent is 1. The combination, with the rim of a closet bowl provided with a dovetail socket, having a reduced opening and an evpanded base, a central elevation on the base of the socket underneath the said reduced opening and a raised margin about the neck of the reduced opening, ot a compressible bumper provided with an external head, a reduced neck and expanded I having oasc. ano a recess in its base adapted to correspond With the said elevation in the base of said insertion in said socket, and the base of socket. Which engages said expanding means. 19 2. The combination with the rim of a In testimony whereof I hereunto set my closet bowl having dovetailed socket hand this 20th day of May 1908.
