Description

J. E. JORDAN.
SHOULDER PAD.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 13, 1910.
Patented J 2.11.3, 1911.
JOSHUA. E. JORDAN, 0F WATERVILLE, MAINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 3, 1911.
Application filed June 13, 1910. Serial No. 566,656.
To all whom it may concern:
'Be it known that I, JosHUA E. JORDAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waterville, county of Kennebec, State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoulder-Pads, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a shoulder pad and particularly to a construction adapted I to receive and retain a strap upon the shoulshowing the a plication of the invention; Fig. 2 is a similar viewof the pad; Fig. 3 is a bottom plan thereof; and Fig. 4 is a crosssection showing the embedded clip therein.
Like numerals of reference refer to like parts in the several figures of the drawing.
The numeral 10 designates the body of the pad which may be formed of any desired material, preferably of rubber or other elastic substance which will permit its bending longitudinally as shown in Fig. 1 and also to cause it to closely conform to the shoulder of the wearer. One of the longitudinal edges of this pad is of greater thickness than the other as shown at 11 and is adapted to be disposed next the arm of the wearer to produce a level surface upon the shoulder by which the strap 12 will be held against slipping thereon. This structure forms a pad of tapered cross-section as shown in Figs. 2
and 4, the under surface thereof being rough-- ened or provided with longitudinal ribs 13 which prevent the slipping of the pad upon the clothing when in position.
The pad is preferably formed by molding and the retaining clip 14 is embedded therein as shown in Fig. 4:. The free ends 15 of this clip extend upward at each side of the In the drawing-Figure 1 is a perspective pad and are bent inward above the body thereof so as to overlap and embrace the strap 12 to prevent either vertical or' longitudinal movement thereof upon the pad and also to hold the pad in position upon the strap when the latter is removed from the shoulder so that these two parts will remain in proper relation and can be instantly applied by the single movement of strap 11 on theshoulder.
The formation of the pad by molding from an elastic material, such as rubber, permits the application of the clips thereto by a single operation and firmly embeds them therein, while the longitudinal corrugations of the ribs upon the inclined surface of the pad effectually retains it against slipping upon the shoulder, particularly when the Weight of an article suspended from the placing the strap is applied thereon. The pad, under -ed for the use of letter carriers and'other persons having occasion to carr a weight suspended by a strap upon the s oulder.
'Having described my invention and set forth its merits, what I claim and desire to seizure by Letters Patent is 1. A shoulder pad comprising an elastic body portion, the lower face of which is inclined and corrugated, and strap retaining clips projecting above its upper surface whereby its upper face, when in use, maintains a lateral level surface and its under face prevents slipping from theshoulder.
2. A shoulder pad comprising a molded elastic body, the lower face of which is laterally inclined and corrugated, and strap retai'ning clips embedded in its body and projected above its u per face.
In testimony w ereofI afiix my signature in presence of two wltnesses.
JOSHUA E. JORDAN.
