Be it known that we, ABRAHAM 'l. Bin:- Lnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, Jackson county, Missouri, and ISAAC Vi BEELER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Vfyandotte and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Floor-Scraper, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to lloor scrapers and has for its object to provide a comparatively simple and inexpensive device of this character especially designed for planing and smoothing hard woou lloors and other surfaces.
A further object of the invention is to provide a scraper including a body portion raving a plurality of cutting blades at one end thereof and a wheel or roller at the other, there being a handle pivotallv mounted on said bod portion and arranged to he swung downwardly in engagement with the axle of the wheel thereby to elevate the cutting blades when transporting the scraper from one portion of a room to another.
A further object is to provide an auxiliary head having a cutting edge arranged at right angles to the longitudinal plane of l he scraper for dressing and smoothing the iloor at the base-board.
A further object is to provide an abrading i head also arranged for attachment to the head of the scraper for polishing and dressing the surface of the ,tloor after the scraping operation.
A still further object of the invention is generally to improve this class of devices so as to increase their utility, durability and efficiency.
Further objects and advantages will appear in the following description, it being understood that various changes in form,
proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a floor scraper constructed in accordance with our invention showing in full lines the cutting blades in engagement 1 with the upper surfaces of the floor and in dotted lines the head carrying the blades in elevated position. Fig. 2 IS a top plan view.
Fig. 3 is a detail bottom plan view. Fig. if is a perspective view of the auxiliary cutting head showing the same in position to be attached to the adjacent end of the scraper. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the abrading block.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the ligures of the drawings.
The improved scraper forming the subject matter of the present invention comprises an elongated body portion 5 having one end thereof terminating in a head (3 and its opposite end provided with a longitudinally disposed slot 7 in which is mounted for rotation a wheel or roller 5%. The wheel 8 is mounted for rotation on a stationary axle 9, the opposite ends of which are threaded and extended beyond the adjacent longitudinal edges of the body portion for engagement with correspondinglv threaded caps it). The side walls of the head (3 are inclined or beveled in the direction of the front of the scraper and secured to the inclined faces of the head is a weighted cap piece or casing l l. The cap piece is provided with a horizontal extension 12 which bears against the top of the head ti, while the inclined walls of said cap are formed wil h anchoring ribs [3 which cngage correspomlinglv shaped grooves or i channels formed in. the head and serve to prevent accidental displacement of the cap piece. j Secured to the inclined or beveled faces of r the cap piece are retaining plates 'l-l having l, their lower ends spaced from the adjacent j walls of the ca p piece to form sockets for the I reception. of detachable cutting bits or blades 15. The retaining plates H are secured to the inclined walls of the cap piece (3 by means of screws or similar fastening devices (3, which. latter cause the lower ends of the retaining plates to frictionally engage the bits l 15 and prevent accidental displacement of l said bits during the scraping operation.
Formed in the bottom of the body portion 6 and extending from the juncture of the inclined walls of the cap 11. to a point near the 1 rear end of the head (5 is a longitudinallydisposed slot 17 for the reception of the shank 18 of an auxiliary cutting head 1E). The auxl iliary cutting head l.) is designed for scraping and polishing the surface of the lloor at l the base-board, said auxiliary cutter being retained in position on the scraper by means of a bolt which extends through vertically alined openings 21 formed in the head 6 and cap piece 11, respectively, for engagement with a clamping nut 22, the latter being arranged to bear against the horizontal exten sion 12 of the cap piece and thus prevent wear on the head. The abutting ends of the retaining plates 14 are cut away at 23 so as to accommodate the shank 18 of the auxiliary head 19, the latter being provided with a substantially shaped slot 24 for the reception of the nose of the scraper, as shown.
In order to polish and dress the surface of the floor after the scraping operation an abrading member 25 is provided, the latter being formed of a block having one end thereof inclined or beveled to conform to the shape of the head 6 and its lower surface provided with a strip of sand paper or other abrading material 26. The upper surface of the block 25 is provided with a longitudinally disposed shank or rib 27 adapted to enter the slot 17, there being a bolt 28 extending vertically from the shank or rib 27 and adapted to enter the openings 21 for engagement with a clamping nut 29 similar in construction to the clamping nut 22. Pivotally mounted on the body portion in advance of the wheel or roller 8 is a yoke or frame 30 preferably formed of sections of gas pipe connected by elbow joints 31. The yoke or frame 30 is re inforced and strengthened by a transverse brace 32 also preferably formed of a section of gas pipe and carrying a'i' section 83 which registers with a corresponding '1' section 34 carried by the adjacent end of the frame, said '1' sections being interiorly threaded for engagement with the correspondingly threaded end of an operating handle 35. The yoke or frame 30 of the operating handle is so arranged with respect to the wheel 8 that when the free end of the handle is swung clownwardly, the side walls of the frame will bear against the caps 10 and thus elevate the cut ting blades 15 above the surface of the floor to the dotted line position shown in Fig. .1 of the drawings and in which position the scraper may be moved to different portions of the room on the wheel 8 without danger of the blades 15 scraping or otherwise mutilating the polished surface of the floor.
When the device is used for scraping the center of the floor the blades 15 are fastened in position on the head of the scraper and the latter moved over the surface of the floor by pushing the same in a forward direction. The auxiliary head 19 is then attached to the head of the scraper and fastened in position by means of the bolt 20 so that the surface of the floor at the baseboard may be operated upon. After the surface of the floor has been planed or scraped the abrading block 25 is fastened to the base of the head 6 by means of the bolt 28 and clamping nut 29 and said scraper moved over the surface of the floor, in the manner before described.
Attention is here called to the fact that the cutting blades 15 are disposed at an angle to each other so as to prevent slipping of the scraper during the planing operation, said cutting blades being so arranged that by simply reversing the body portion the blades will be in convenient position to be sharpened without the necessity of detaching said blades from the head. The particular disposition of the cutting blades or bits not only prevents side-wise movement or lateral shifting of the scraper during the cutting operation but also permits the device to run smoothly over the joints in the floor and over cross grain in the timber.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
1. In a floor finishing tool, a wheel and its axle, a carrier pivotally mounted on the axle, a tool mounted on the free end of the carrier, and a handle pivotally connected to the carrier in advance of the axle, said axle being in the path of the handle to serve as a fulcrum.
2. In a floor finishing tool, a tool support slotted at one end, and carrying the tool at the opposite end, an axle passing transversely and loosely through the slotted end of the support, and projecting from the sides thereof, a wheel mounted on the axle in the slots, a yoke pivotally connected to the sup port in front of the axle, the extended portion of the latter being in the path of the branches of the support, and serving as a fulcrum, and a handle connected to the yokev 3. A scraper including a body portion having one end thereof provided with a longitudinally disposed slot and its opposite end formed with a tool-carrying head, an axle intersecting the slot and having its opposite ends threaded and extended beyond the adjacent side walls of the body portion, caps engaging the threaded ends of the axle, a wheel mounted for rotation on the axle in said slot, and an operating handle pivotally mounted on the body portion between the head and slotted end of the body portion and adapted to be swung downwardly in engagement with the caps for elevating the tool carrying head.
4:.
