INVALID-BED.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 22, 1909.
Application led February 6, 1909. Serial No. 476,518.
`States of America, residing at (1) .Parkcrs burg, (2) Mount Oliver bmfongh, in the county of 1) "tv'ood, .\lleghcny, and State of (1) lVest Virginia, (2f) Pennsylvania, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements inlnvalid-leds, of which the following is a speciticatiim, refereinife being had therein to the accmcpanying drawing.
This invention relates to invalid beds, and the primary object of our invention is the provision of novel means in connection with a bed for elevating the head or feet of a patient, whereby the patient can be retained `in a comfortable position or in a position coi'n'tucivc to the curing of certain ailments.
Another object of our invention is to provide an attachment for an ordinary metallic bed that Will permit of a patient being positioned whereby bed pans can be used without disturbing the comfort of the patient.
A further object of our invention is to provide an attachment for beds that can he advantageously used in hospitals for cor rectly positioning a patient, vvhoreby a sur gical operation can be made, limb fractures properly taken care of, and the comfort of a person upon the attachment made perfect'.
A stili further object of our invention is to provide an adjustable support that can be easily and quickly attached to a bed and manipulated to support a person in a comfortable position, whether the same is used in a sick room or simply for lounging pur poses.
With the above and other objects in view which willinore readily appear as the inven tion is better understood, the same consists in the novel constriaction, combination and arrangement-of parts to be hereinafter described and then specifically claimed.
Referring to the drawings :-I*`igure 1 is an elevation of a bed equipped with our attachment, Fig. 2 is an end View of the same, and F is a cross sectional View of a bed and its attachment.
In the accompanying` drawings, we have illustrated a metallic bed having head and foot pieces, the head piece comprising cy lindrical posts 1 and thc foot.- piece cylindrical posts 2, the posts of the foot piece being connected to the posts of the head piece by longitudinally disposed rails 3.
Ctamped to the posts 1 of the head piece and at the upper ends thereof are sleeves t'provided with parallel flanges 5. Journaled in the flanges 5 .is a transverse shaft (3 having one end thereof provided with a 'ratchet wheel 7 and a crank 8. Adapted to engage the ratchet 4wheel 7 and prevent a rearward rotation of said Wheel -and the shaft (5 yis a pivoted gravity pawl 9, said paWl adapted to wind thereon are cables 10, said ables being connected to a transverse bar. 11 fixed to sleeves 12 slidably mounted upon the posts -1. The foot piece of the bed is similarly equipped, with the exception that the sha tt t is provided with loosegrooved sheaves or pulleys 13, these loose sheaves or pulleys being employed for Supporting a rope or cable used for maintaining a 4fractured limb in a free and easy elevated position. i
The sleeves 12 of the head and foot pieces of the hed are provided upon the inner edges thereof with pivoted links 14 and pivotally connor-.ted to said links are two frames 15 and 1G approximately the area of the bed, said frames having the confronting ends thereof pivot-ally connected together, as at 17. The frames 15 and 16 are adapted to support strips of fabric or sheeting 17 having suitable openings formed therein, Whereby easy access can be had to Jthe under side of the body lying upon the attachment. To add rigidity to the frames 15 and 1G, a yoke lw is used for connecting the sides of the frame l5 adjacent'. to the inner pivoted end of said frame.
'lo maintain the frames 15 and 1G in a horizontal plane, the sides of the frame 15 are provided with pivoted links 19 having notches` 2U for receiving pins 21 carried by the rides of the frame 1li. In order that the linksy l5) can be supported in connection With the frame 15, said links` are provided with notches to receive pins 23, carried by the sides of the frame 15.
'i`o rn'eveut the inner pivoted ends of the frames 15 and 16 from sagging due to the weightof a body vupon the same, the longi` tudinal rails of the bed are provided with pivoted members 24, said members being slotted and adjustably connected to supports 25 having extensions 26 for supporting the inner pivoted ends of the frames 15 and 16. The supports 25 are connected to the members 24 by wing thumb nuts 27 and 'by adjusting said win g thumb nuts, the supports 25 can be positioned to properly support the pivoted, ends of th@ frames 15 and 16. The projections 26 of the supports 25 are adapted to engage the rails 3, as shown in dotted lines in F ig. 1, and support the members 24 when not in use.
The outer ends of the frames 15 and 16 can be easily elevated by rotating the cranks 8 to either support the head or feet of a body ata greater elevation than the central portion of a body. By maintaining the links 19 in the position shown in' Fig. 1, the frames 15 and 16 can be elevated a considerable distance above the rails 3 and the supports 25 adjusted to prevent the inner pivoted ends ofthe frames 15 and 16 from sagging.
Our attachment in its entirety is made of a light and durable non-'corrosive material 'and the simplicity of construction permits of the presentl type of hospital bed being equipped with the attachment at a comparatively small cost.
While in the drawings forming a part of this application there is illustrated the preferred embodiments, of our invention, we would have it understood that the detail construction thereof can be varied or changed as to shape, proportion and manner of assemblage without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having now describedfour invention what we claim as new, is
l. In an invalid bed, the combination with head and foot pieces connected by longitudinal rails, of sleeves clamped upon said head and foot pieces, transverse shafts revoliib'ly supported by said sleeves, cranks mounted npon said shafts, cables connecting with said shafts and adapted to wind thereon,` bars connectedl to the lower ends of said cables, sleeves slidably mounted upon the head and foot pieces of said bed and connecting with said bars, pivoted links supported by said sleeves, frames pivotally supported by -said links and having the ends 4thereof connected together, links ,pivotally carried by one of said frames and adapted to engage the other of said frames for maintaining a rigid connection between said frames, adjustable supports carried by the rails of sald bed for engaging the pivoted ends of Asaid frames and preventing said eeaoee frames from sagging, and means supported' by said slidable sleeves, frames pivotally.
connected to said links and adapted to be pivotally connected together, a depending yoke carried by. one of said frames, links carried by one of said frames and adapted tol engage the other of said frames for providing a rigid. connection between said frames,
and'adjustable supports carried by said rails for engaging said frames and preventing the pivoted ends thereof from sagging.
, 3. In an invalid bed, the combination with head'and foot pieces, and rails connecting said head and foot pieces, of sleeves fixed upon said head and foot pieces, shafts revolubly supported by said sleeves, sleeves adjustably mounted upon said he'ad and foot pieces and adapted to be moved by a rotation of said shafts, links pivotally carried'by said slidable sleeves, framesppivotally connected .to said links and adapted to be pivotally connected together, links carried by one of said frames and adapted to engage the other of said frames for providing a rigid connection between said frames, and
adjustable supports carried by said rails for engaging Asaid frames and preventing the pivoted ends thereof from sagging.
4. In an invalid bed, the combination with a bed having head and foot pieces, and rails connecting said head and oot pieces, of sleeves Xed upon said head and foot pieces, shafts rev'olubly supported by said sleeves, sleeves slidably mounted upon said head and foot pieces and adapted to be moved by a rotation of said shaft, links pivotally connected to said slidable sleeves, frames pivotally connected to said links and adapted to be pivtally connected together, and adjustable supports carried by said rails for `engaging the pivoted ends of said frames and preventing said frames from sagging.
In testimony whereof we aliix our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
