JOSEPH J. JONES AND MlOllAllL OBRIEN, OF INllNAlOLlS, INDIANA.
PARTITION FOR BEDS.
Application filed August 18, 1908.
T o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we7 Josnrn J. JONES and MICHAEL OBRIEN, citizens o' the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county oi' Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and usei'ul Improvements in Partitions for Beds; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description oi" the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
We have produced an improvement whereby a double bedstead may be converted into two single bedsteads, and l'or this purpose we will set out in the claim the parts and combination ci' parts wherein our improvements reside in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which,-
Figure 1 shows in top view a double bedstead provided with our improvement whereby it is converted into two single bedsteads. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows in perspective one o'l` the middle uprights and parts oi' the middle rails connected thereto and of a partition o'l' removable rolls erected thereon. Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line 44 oi Fig. 1 and particularly showing the partition of removable rolls and the construction whereby the covering is rendered separate at the inner or the adjacent sides oil the two beds. Fig. 5 is a sectional detail showing a removable board partition. Fig. is an identical view showing a removable wire woven partition. Fig. 7 shows a detail sectional view oi' one oi the middle uprights, the means for setting either oi' the vslidable partitions shown in Figs. 5 and 6 and the means oi connecting the middle rails with the uprights. Fig. 8 shows in top view the locking engagement oi' the partition with the uprights.
While our invention is shown as applied to the double metallic bedstead now in general use, obviously it may be applied to a wooden bedstead or to other construction oi' bedsteads. In the construction shown the bedstead is provided with middle rails 1-1 which are separated so that each 'forms one oi' the side rails of a single bedstead and a space 2 between the rails for the depending covering 3 of the two separate beds 4, the bed frames or bottoms 5 ior which, are each seated upon the side and middle rails in any suitable manner.
In a metallic bedstead a simple and dura- Specication of Letters Patent.

ble construction lor supporting the middle rails may be made directly upon the head and foot uprights 6 by means ol a yoke having its arms 7 standing inward at each side ot' the upright and may be integral with or secured to said uprights, and to the ends of yoke-arms to which the rails are coupled by the well known slidable coupling `ioint S to allow of the convenient putting together and the .removal oll these rails. The middle uprights may be connected to the bedstead frame in any suitable manner, as shown, such connection is made by the rods 9 constituting the head and .toot frames and the uprights may also form middle legs 10 vgiving a irni support lor the middle rails and for the par-- tition which is mounted in the middle uprights and separate the two beds. For this purpose any suitable partition may be provided either in the l'orm of rolls or bars 12, removably seated in sockets 18 formed upon or 'lixed to the side of the upright, or as a board 12 or as a woven wire panel 12u each slidable in guides 13/ lformed upon or lixed to the side ot the upright as in Figs. 5, 6 and 7 so that it can be slid in the upright guides, and lifted out; while the rolls or bars are set in their u right sockets.
To renc er it certain that the covering ol the separate beds will hang down in the space between them, the lower edge of the partition is provided with members forming a sort of tender 14 depending mediately within the space between the middle rails as in Fig. 1 so that in laying the cover it will strike the fender and fall between it and the edge ol the bed. The fender is preferably made of short rods fixed to and depending from the partition and connected at their lower ends by a rod 15 which serves to prevent the possible catching ol the covering on the points of the fender rods.
To prevent the spreading of the middle uprights provision is made for locking them to the partition and for this purpose the ends of the partition may be made to engage or interlock as by dovetailing or otherwise with the sockets or guides of the uprights as in Figs. 1 and 8 and by this means the partition is made to brace the posts and the bedstead and be applied and removed by a vertical movement-the interlocking engagement being automatic. `W hen the partition is formed of rolls the upper one may serve to lock the 1 uprights together and brace them.
The construction whereby the partition and the middle rails are mounted upon the middle uprights renders it convenient to .coIlneet the bedstead head and foot-rails with the middle uprights and allow both the middle rails and the partition to be removed and replaced when desired and Without regard to the bedstead.
The bedstead is advantageous in the economy of room and in cost, and especially Afor use and in keeping the occupants separated for sanitary pur Doses, and for hotel-s, hospitals, schools an for childrens bed-rooms.
It is important to note that the partition While dividing the beds at and below the .covering also divides the separate beds above the covers and thereby renders the separation of the two beds effective not only in preventing eommunication, between the occupants, but in preventing them from seeing each .other in their recumbent positions. It is also important to note that While the partitions connect and brace the uprights above the beds, the mediate rails serve as tie-bars to connect and brace the uprights beloW the beds as shown in Fig. 4.
We claim:-
A partition for a bedstead having side rails and mediate uprights at each end, said partition having means adapted to connect it to said uprights and also having members eX- tending below said rails.
lll testimony whereof We have signed c01111 names to this specification in the presence .of two subscribing Witnesses.
