JACOB O. LUDEN, OF READING, PENNSYLVANIA.
SASH-LOCK.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB G. LUDEN, cit-izen of the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in sash locks and the object is to provide a lock of simple construction; one that can be easily applied and one that will effectually lock both the upper and lower sash at the same time and at any desired position in the frame.
The device is intended to lock one sash against the other and not against the window frame, and this locking may be effected with either sash in any position.
The invention is more fully described in the following specification and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of my lock. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the under side. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the casing. Fig. 4 shows the slide in perspective.
The numeral 1 designates the casing. This casing comprises a tubular portion with a flange on either side thereof for securing it to the sash in the usual manner. In this tubular portion I form an internal semicircular lug 2 which encircles the upper half of the casing, while a similar lug 2, slightly forward of the first named lug, is formed on the lower side, the two forming substantially a complete convolution of a thread.
The numeral 3 designates a slide, having a right-angled end 4 at its forward end and also a right angled portion at its rear end in which I form a depression or notch 5.
The numeral 6 designates the operating screw whose forward end is formed with a thread 7 adapted to engage the lug 2 in the casing in the same manner as a threaded bolt engages a tapped or threaded surface, and its extremity is adapted to bear against Specification of Letters Patent.

the angled end 4 of the slide. The body portion 0 the screw is reduced in diameter at a point 8, about midway of its length, and this reduced portion rests in and turns freely in the notch 5 of the slide and is adapted to carry the slide forward or backward with it when turned in either direction.
The casing is screwed onto the top edge of the lower sash in such position that the slide 4 will contact with the upright frame of the upper sash when it is screwed out.
In operation, the handle is turned and the screw will travel either forward or backward by reason of its engagement with the lugs 2 in the casing; the slide will be carried along by reason of its engagement with the screw at 8 and its contact against the angled end 4. The outer surface of the angled end 4 will thus be pressed against the surface of the sash and prevent relative movement between the upper and lower sash.
The slide is made of a thickness and width to allow it to slide freely on the upper edge of the sash, even though the casing be securely fastened.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is In a sash lock, a casing comprising a tubular portion with a flange on either side thereof, semi-circular lugs on the inside thereof so arranged as to form a complete convolution of a thread, a slide having angled ends the inner one of which is notched, an operating screw, a thread on the end of said screw adapted to engage said lugs, a reduced. portion adapted to engage said notch and its extremity adapted to contact with the forward angled end of the slide, so that the turning of the screw will move the slide in the casing.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
JACOB O. LUDEN.
