To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, ALviN C. Gtisriirson, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tied Oak, in the county ot Montgomery and State ot' iowa, have inif'ented new and uset'ul Improvements in Printers Borders, of which theI following is a specification.
'lhe invention relates to an improvement in printers borders and is designed particularly to provide a border which will eliminate the ditlicuilt work ot hand assembling ofthe short pieces ot' rule and slug usually necessary in making up a border.
ln making up a border, as usually practiced the type setter will first select and assemble the short lengths ot rule having the initer ends to forni the corners ot the border, and will then select suitable lengths of rule to be arranged between the end pieces to traine thus provided is cast integral of a' transverse shape shown more particularly in v Fig. 2, in which the relatively inner portion ot the material throughout the' sides and end of the traine is otl less height than the outer portion, said outer portion, as 4, thus corresponding to the ordinary rule of the border and being of course, type. high7 while the inner portion, as 5, corresponds to the ordinary slug ot' the border and is, of course, lead high. At the free ends of the sides 2 and 23 the vertical or end edge of the portion 2o form. the border ot' the proper length and 5 terminates inwardly beyond the similar width. It is;V therefore, apparent that in edge ot the portion 5, or in other Words the in to cooperate with the sides and an ciid-secsembling the iranie and end to provide the tion which will cooperate with either the complete border the ends ot the slug portion additional inserts or the end ot' the sides ot S of the separate ends 7 ot the border Will the wasting, so that by the use ot' pieces ot' lit snugly in the shoulders 6 with the inner appropriate length the longitudinal dimensurtaees ot the rule portion 9 Ot the end 7 ,sion ot the border may be exactly that debearingl squarely against the end edges of sired. the conneetioin between the insert thc rule portions 4 ot the sides 2 and 3. pieces and the sides ot the casting, or be- '.lhe border is thus complete and by the tittwoen the detachable end and the sides being ting oi the end in the traine as described so arranged as to insure an absolutely acthere is no possibility ot irregular assemo rurale tit ot the part?. blingl and hence when printed troni the rule 'lhe invention will be described in the tolwill show practically an unbroken border lowing specilication, reference being had` lHC- particularly to the accompanying drawings, To provide for increasing the longitudiin which z.- nal dimension or length of the border it de- Figure l is a view in plan of my improved sircd I'construct inserts l0, which are pretevery instance each line ot the border is made up ot several lengths or' rule, and, of course. itis equally true ot' the slug or lead arranged within the rule by which the type is spaced trom the rule. Owing to the comparatively large number ot' pieces required in making a borde` and the practical iinpossibility ot' so connecting these pieces as to maintain absolute alinenie'nt and unit'ormit-y. particularly at the corners7 the setting ot a border is a comparatively ditlicult operation.'
'llie present invention is designed to obviate the dilliculties ot border setting7 and to vthis end l t'orin the border with. sido pieces and one end cast integral, the casting incl uding both the rule and slug. lVith the castin;` thus torined l provide additional pieces slug portion of they border on the 'sides of the integral trame provided is of less length than the rule port-ion, whereby to providev shoulders (i, as shown. With the frame thus formed l provide an end piece 7 adapted to tit the tree ends oit the sides 2 and 3,*said end.V I
piece being oit' exactly the same sectional contour as that ot the traine and therefore including an inner lead high section 8 and an outer type high section or rule 9. ln the end thus provided the rule portion is ot' a length corresponding exactly to the niaXiniuin distance between the relatively outer surfaces otl the sides 2 and i3, while the slug portion S oit a lengt-h corr spending eX- actly to the distance between the relatively inner surfaces oit the rule portions oi the sides 2 and i3.
