Description

J'. LINDSAY.
PRINTING-TYPE. No.175,119 Patented March 21,1876.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN LINDSAY, OF WILLIAMSBURG, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN PRINTING-TYPES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,119, dated March 21, 1876; application filed June 26, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN LINDSAY, of Williamsburg, Kings county, New York, have-invented a new and useful Improvement in Printing-Type, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a front view of one of my improved type, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of 'the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to. save time and labor in setting up advertisements in which it is desired to use composite letters.
, The invention consists in a composite printing-type the face of which is made up ofa series of small letters or characters.
Heretofore, in forming the letters composing words and sentences in display advertisemgits, it has been common to form each letter or characterby arranging a number of small letters or characters in such a manner.
as well as considerable expense incident to the nature of such complex composition of small types.
1n the drawing, Arepresents one of my improved types, showing a large capital letter H formed from a number of smallcapitalletters H, which are so arranged as to form the said large capital letter.
In constructing composite types of this na ture they may be cast in .the manner common in making ordinary types-that is, in molds provided with suitable matrices.
A mammoth letter of any denomination, Whether a capital or small letter, may be con- 1 structed according to this invention, and a font of such letters may be provided with suitable stantially as shown, and for the purpose described.
J0 HN LINDSAY.
