To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CA VIN 'WiLsoN, a citi- Zen of the United States, and a resident of Richmond, in the county of Ilenrico and State of Virginia, have invented a new and Improved Portable Fence, of which the following is full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to fences, and has for its object to provide supports by which the wires or rails, or longitudinal members, may be quickly adjusted in position and may be as quickly removed without injury to the supports, or to the wires or rails or longitudinal members.

The fence is durable and permanent when desired, but at any time it may be removed with little trouble, to be set up in another place.

Still other objects of the invention will appear in the followin complete description.

In this specification I will describe the pre ferred form of my invention, but it will be understood that I do not limit myself thereto as I consider myself entitled to all forms and embodiments of the invention which may be held to fall within the scope of the appended claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, in which Figure 1 shows the invention as applied to wire fences of the usual type 2 shows the A-shaped support having a vertical rod secured thereto; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same 3 Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the vertical rod.

By referring to the drawings, it will be seen that I provide i i-shaped supports having side supporting legs 2, which are spaced apart at their upper terminals, and have disposed between them a vertical rod 4, the upper terminal of the vertical rod not extending as high as the upper terminals of the side supporting legs 2, so that a deep groove is formed between the upper terminals of the side supporting legs 2, the bottom of the grooves being formed by the upper terminal of the vertical rod 4, a bolt passing through orifices in the upper terminals of the side supporting legs 2 and the vertical rod 4, by which they are held together. The vertical rod 4 depends from the apex of the r-shaped support and its lower terminal is disposed in close proximity to the transverse member 5,

this transverse member 5 being secured to the side supporting'legs' 2, near their lower terminals. The lower terminal of the vertical rod 4 is secured to the transverse member 5 by means of a wire 12. There are orifices 13 in the vertical rod 4 and the wire by which the transverse member 5 is secured to the vertical rod 4 is disposed in one of these orifices 13. Eyes 14, mounted on cotter pins are provided, the shanks being disposed in the orifices 13 and being secured thereto, in the customary manner. In the eyes 14 are disposed the longitudinal Wires 14 which form the body of the fence, a longitudinal wire 15 being disposed in the deep groove between the upper terminals of the side supporting legs 2.

In using my invention, it may at times be found convenient to dispense with the eyes 14 in which case the longitudinal wires 14 are disposed in the orifice 13, but I prefer to use the eyes 14 for by so doing the wires may be secured to the A-shaped supports without being bent in any manner.

t will be observed that when the user of my fence desires to remove the upper longitudinal wire he may do so by springing it over the top of the z t-shaped support, inasmuch as it is held in the deep groove and is not secured thereto, as the upper terminals of the side supporting legs prevent the lateral movement of the upper longitudinal wire 15 except when the user of the fence desires to remove it by lifting it over the upper terminals of the side supporting legs 2.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. A support for a wire fence, comprising inclined legs having parallel and apertured upper ends, a transverse bar connecting the legs near their lower ends, said bar being apertured intermediate of its ends, a vertical bar having an opening at each end and protransverse bar connecting the legs near their lower ends, and a vertical bar having its loWer end secured to the transverse bar at the center of length of said bar and its upper end secured between the parallel upper ends of the inclined legs, the upper end of the said bar terminating short of the parallel ends of the legs and forming therewith a groove at the top of the support for the reception of the 1 0 top Wire of the fence, the said vertical bar bename to this specification in the presence of 15 tWo subscribing Witnesses.
